Napoleon: Total War (computer game)

Customer Review

The first thing I'm going to list the things that struck me positively and then turn to the negative side.

Positives:

- Better music than the previous, where "better" here "average" means.
- No bad bugs
- Better animation of explosions / firing of artillery
- Better navigation on the world map over ETW because there arose stuttering even at very good computers without end. I did not have these problems with NTV.
- The currencies of the individual countries are designed individually. In NTW, the standard units draw finally also in different ways.

Negatives:

-Steam (I write this at the end of something else)
- The interface to the real-time battles has been restructured and is now much more confusing and difficult to use
- The developers like blue and gray so much that they have kept the menu, interface and pretty much everything else in blues and grays. It looks uncomfortably from one sometimes believes that the color was simply forgotten.
- Unpleasant: Artillery units of the major nations (Prussia, Austria, Russia, Great Britain ...) are "colored". The wood of the cannons is blue in Prussia, for example, because the color of the nation is in play (green for Russia, etc.). All this looks broke out # + § and toy standard.
- The artillery range was reduced criminal and limited (no mortar and Puckle guns more and only "Diäthaubitzen" with just 7 pounds, in ETW had howitzers at least 12 pounds). It can not be that only the French and English have clever howitzers and mortars Ottomans.
- Infantry flee regardless of size, Rested awareness and type immediately without even dispense only one shot when enemy cavalry comes near her with me.
- My graphics settings are set at Ultra and even here see the faces of very disappointing. The sashes of the soldiers always seem to have a minimum distance of 10 centimeters from the body to preserve (so they float). Although riders pretend they had reins in hand, but these seem to be invisible, because I do not see them. In addition, there are many cases where the collision detection is not working properly, and in general I find the graphics not much better than in ETW (the cute screenshots are always extremely edited). However, I have no DX10, but that does not mean that the soldiers may look inferior design without DX10.
- CA wanted the individual soldiers within the units make individual (minimum 4, maximum 64 different animated soldiers). Due to the historically based unit uniforms thus leaving only the faces, to provide some variety in the presentation. That was not done. Some reviewers say this quite clearly wrong things. Many cavalry units consist of exactly the same rider, sometimes two. Only horses have partially different coat colors, but not always. Infantry comes to my mind on a maximum of four different soldiers, the representation of faces even on Ultra graphics are poor. But ...
- ... That's also not as bad as most soldiers have helmets and headgear that cover their faces from the mouth upward. Why? In NTW can reduce the camera not quite as far toward the ground, as was the case in ETW. The camera stops slightly above the heads of the soldiers. This way you can see the faces of Prussia, England and many other never. The course also depends on the unit type, but is very common.
- Can you even see the face of a soldier: apathetic expression
- Strikes and explosions, the firing of cannons and cavalry movements cause annoying camera shake. In general, one exaggerates arg, because they are fed when the camera hovers high above the battlefield and every artillery strike screen is shaking.
- Maximum unit size is again as small as at ETW or even smaller (45 to wind riflemen). Why can not leave CA players to choose the standard size?
- Sparse texturing of uniforms. Mods will have the judge again
- Unfortunately, there is once again to a few unit types
- The AI is more stupid than in ETW. They usually arises (irrespective of the degree of difficulty) only in a long line and can shoot down.
- Personally it seems to me as if the battlefields have become barren and boring. There are far fewer buildings and barely Fences and walls, behind which you can hide. In the Custom Battles, it's even worse. And I also battlefields seem to be smaller, although I'm not quite sure.
- Cold seasons now have a serious impact on armies that are "outside". You have the armies in the winter in towns, etc. quartered, otherwise they will be partially depleted massively. Is it more advanced in the game, then you have ever armies in all possible places, which can make the search for a particular unit unnerving. On top of that armies can no longer build forts now what annoys even more.
- There is only very, very few cities in which you can build artillery units. When I had conquered Prussia 20 regions, there were still only two cities in which I was able to build artillery. It's annoying, because you then have to send these few points from laaaaangsam to theaters of war his artillery.

Conclusion

Generally I come NTW in wide trains more like an add-on to ETW ago. Certainly, the graphics have improved somewhat, but there was so much taken over, that one can hardly believe that it should be at NTW to a full new game. A few talented modders could have done for ETW also. All in all, it's not a bad game, but many things that keep people at ETW did not like and some that were liked the players were verschlimmbessert. So I will give just three points the game is not only to Steam, but Steam makes a big part of it. I do not care if the opposite is the game itself unfair and why I am going to explain more:
I have to carry no interest in ideological debates with TW or Steam-fanboys. Steam I have known for Half Life 2 and I have to say that I have learned to hate more and more. For me Steam is nothing but marketing Spyware with the differentiate that everyone knows that it is spying on. It is intended to combat piracy games, but that crap I have in my entire life have not heard. Look times on torrent sites around, and you will find that there were a dozen torrents online shortly after publication of NTV, the chopped versions of the game offered for download. These hacks are now extremely comfortable, so you have to be a hacker yourself, to be able to play the hacks. Consequence: no Steam, no online registration, no accounts, no overloaded server, no single cent spent. So what has brought Steam? Nothing at all. Steam has held a single leechers them even any game to gamble illegally. The problems then of course only those who purchase the game legally, because the need to deal with Steam and all the problems (not available servers, installation orgies, crashes, slow down other programs ...) that it entails. Account bond purchased the game is another shortcoming. I know that many do not have to deal with all these problems and Steam certainly has its good points, but it is a hated program and I can blame anyone. Look at the comments for ETW and you will find that the game comes straight times to 2.5 stars. Most reasons are sloppy coding and Steam. The people do not like flat. On Amazon.com, the game gets gerademal 2 stars. Here Steam is even more common reason for negative reviews. How it works at all Amazon.xxx. Mods should incidentally be illegal and also that we have indirectly owe the existence of Steam. Downloadable Content (DLC) is the magic word here. You can see the beautiful in ETW. You get a game that is ready to sell 70% and the remaining 30% should be downloaded in small bites. This Happen include new units (ETW), in other games it may fractions or new items and quests (role playing) or missions (first person shooter), vehicles and so on. All this is done via Steam. In the end you then pay no more for a full game, but only a boring basic version for the same price. At the end you have a lot more money is spent than for a game that has the contents of the DLC from the beginning, because it is not running on Steam. Even with NTW many things that are missing now will come later as DLC. Mods are therefore the publishers an eyesore because especially at ETW aimed Mods mainly due to a larger unit range from. As the first paid DLC came with new units, many people had already free mods with three times as many new units. Ergo, many players have caught on the DLC's and therefore was less coal for Sega. Is it any wonder then that mods with publishers are now unloved and should be banned wherever possible. I fear the worst times, this whole DLC waste will probably intensify in the future and we play our games online might only chapter in five years, Quest or can be downloaded as mission and there is no more DVDs. By dividing these games are of course made to be felt more expensive. There are also DLCs that cost again. And after five years all the services for the game are set, and the license to play disappears.
Previously bought one games on CD or DVD and they belonged to a, today you acquire only one license and can not install or play without support from "outside" the game. What ever may come, the future looks bleak. Only the hacker will also rejoice in five years, because no matter what the game industry tries that hackers are smarter rule and also in ten years their games still "possess" and even for free.
