Olé (CD)

Customer Review

Let there be no mistake, "Olé" may well have been recorded on Atlantic, this drive is to be regarded as his first recording Impulse. Besides the session was recorded two days after the first session Impulse master. Because there are here, as in the days when "Giant Steps" was recorded (and later as "Ascension" for example), a decisive moment in the evolution of Coltrane aesthetics. This approach is to be completed with the remarkable "Africa Brass Sessions" and the phenomenal recordings at the Village Vanguard approach matures. The elements borrowed from Spanish and oriental folklore are never superficially grafted but melodically and rhythmically well integrated in language "jazz" Coltrane (born hypertrophy of the Be-Bop idiom and looking for a "original" lyricism as Bechet and Lester Young were the heirs already). Modal vamps, held by the lower (two here, Reggie Workman and Art Davis), become more insistent. McCoy develops its harmonic innovations. Elvin Jones began his revolution of drumming. A notice the welcome addition of Freddie Hubbard and Eric Dolphy. Magistral.
