Because if the Genesis Live 1973 had its merits (ha! This version of The Knife), it suffered from too little extensive selection to be really satisfying and a mixer too rough to please audiophiles (that detail largely repaired by the 2009 remix, it should be noted).
Of the twelve songs of the selection, recorded largely at a Paris concert at the Sports Palace (6/13/77), five from the two albums released with Phil Collins on vocals, so that there is like a fish water. The rest, you know who created, therefore the real novelty, what the challenge of having to replace a vocalist with a unique personality. It is clear that Phil is doing well, finds its own path, his own way (voice) imposing a more pop tone without ruining the epic compositions which without, would be none discounts. It must be said that Genesis there, whether with Chester Thompson and Bill Bruford (the latter only on The Cinema Show) luxury alternates intermittent drummer all instrumental strengths of its predecessor, starting with a somewhat mistreated Hackett the mix (not on the final version 2009 though) but indeed present and oh so helpful as in Firth of Fifth (amputated his piano intro, shame!), or the final apotheosis Los Backing where his technical mastery n ' was matched by the feeling that he infuses into its parts. It suffices to compare some common pieces with the following live Genesis Three Sides Live, to realize the vacuum he will leave to his departure. The rest of the line-up, Banks and Rutherford, is obviously at the height of their associates with Mike in essential support (not just bass) and Tony still blazing behind his keyboards. More than solid, it is inspired in question with still progressive group, still much in control of his subject on a tracklist which, of course, some will regret the absence of essential or judged as such (The Knife or Watcher of the Skies come to mind), but offering a first time, all of Supper's Ready, which is not nothing, we must admit.
Featuring since its first edition, a quality recording, Seconds Out even more resplendent in its final mixing 2009 and remains, though those who believe Genesis without Gabriel is no longer absolutely Genesis, an excellent album live almost ideal introduction to this giant 70s at the height of his art ... Not for much longer, alas.
