The negative point of the book is perhaps the very beginning of the book with this ridge threatens the African continent to the Americas, announcing their imminent demise, caused by a weapon of mass destruction believed to remove any sign of life. But the devastation in history seems to be caused by a full stop technology, and does not cause any death directly. Moreover, the story is set in France. The only connection that I think can explain this upheaval is a kind of chain reaction following the attack on the African continent against the Americans. But this is only a supposition and the author does not give us more indication about it. It's a shame.
But back in France with it's brutal end to all forms of energy.
The world has become accustomed to relying on its advanced technology to live, finds himself dispossessed of them. This is when people start to loot and kill to survive. Francois one of the main characters in this book share thus regained its beautiful "White" and trying to organize their survival. The group will gradually grow and François will show a man of quality leader. Intelligent, thoughtful, and denude feelings when the situation demands. Thus for survival our group will commit murders, and punish with death one of them who fell asleep during a watchtower. His lack of attention will put the group in immediate danger which somehow justifies the application of this punishment.
In a world where there is no rule except that of survival, only the fittest can get by and they have no right to mistake. The group formed after an expedition and will grow at first, eventually decrease over the events. The world has become dangerous. It is only after arriving at the destination that Francis will attempt to recreate a society by not making the same mistakes of the past. It will therefore introduce new rules.
Throughout the play, we feel that every decision is the right of Francis. You could almost consider it a sort of manual on survival in a similar case.
I liked reading this who reconciles me a bit with science fiction literature.
