As with each of the previous albums you have to say in this: It's not like its predecessors, it's new and it's different. Although you recognize many parallels to earlier songs and styles, but one has to no time the feeling that you get a little warmed served. The main feature of Born Villain is the clearer structure of the songs, which act significantly reduced at first glance than previous titles. Especially the really bothered me at the beginning, I somehow had the feeling that something is missing, but as so often new elements were added at each listening test, which make the songs more interesting every time.
Marilyn Manson is extremely undervalued since time immemorial or at very reduced to the shock rock image. However, those who seriously deals with the band's music and the lyrics of the person Brian Warner / Marilyn Manson, who realizes how much talent behind it. During the last two albums have geschwächelt something (but still well were), this is again one that has the makings of a classic. It is varied, has simple but catchy guitar parts, ingenious lyrics and an unmistakable style that is found in only a few artists.
For Packaging: Like many others, I am also disappointed by the packaging a bit. A booklet is simply missing, although the simplicity of the package with this album the concept belongs. I'll probably make my own booklet and place it in the envelope, maybe that was even MMs intention? Encourage the design creativity of listeners? Since the opinions are surely clearly apart :-). After all, it is a digipack, the CD is thus in a plastic frame, not in a cardboard flap, which I welcome. Cardsleeves as they now often occur, are in my opinion a lot of nerve, especially as they inevitably scratch with the time the CD.
That should, remarked on the edge, incidentally, be a part of the product description: "Art of the CD sleeve" (jewel case, digipack, Cardsleeve, booklet yes / no?). That would certainly welcome many Amazon customers.
Back to the topic:
The highlights of the album in my opinion are:
- Hey, Cruel World (Very catchy riff)
- No Reflection
- The Gardener
- The Flowers Of Evil (Toller Refrain)
- Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms
- Murderers Are Getting Prettier Every Day (A proof that Manson has also something in the style of the Antichrist Superstar era plan)
- (Hear several times and pay attention to every detail!) Breaking The Same Old Ground
I could write much more about the album or MM in general, but I think that when it comes to music, everyone should own impression. Paid critics write anyway only provocative to get noticed and I'm a Fan of course not entirely neutral.
Conclusion: One of the best albums of the year, although it will likely perish by the sales figures rather forth, but what do you expect even if itself a CD with panpipe music keeps for several weeks in the Top 10?
