Robust device with removable driver quirks

Unfortunately, my onboard sound card does not support Toslink - therefore had to be a cost-effective solution. This external card is of course much more flexible than a PCI card and should be really expensive - is it not: I paid only 13 euros.
But the build quality is good - the card comes in a solid aluminum housing.
The equipment is but extremely skinny - an unprotected mini-CD, a USB connection cable (length about 60cm)
I expect - even with a cheap product - that there is a halfway useful documentation and Inst CD: Here was not the case - the CD is outdated and cumbersome to use, a manual I have searched in vain - for this I have to deduct a star.

I then read and found that the generic driver of Win7 support / 8 only analog output me a little clever.
For digital (Toslink) tone you need the appropriate drivers - with me the Win8 driver did not work, but the Win7 (64 bit (googling for CMedia cmi106 win7 64bit)

The drivers for Win7 64 bit I have a 5.1 signal via Toslink. Of course, under "Sound" the digital audio device is selected and the VLC player the checkmark SPDIF -If had available - are set. With the Win8 drivers worked Toslink far (yet).

The sound card sounds satisfactory to good: I would compare the sound with a good on-board solution.

In summary, I would recommend this product if you are a little familiar with the sound setup and drivers.
