Having been fired from the Sanctuary in The Last Book, Pleasant and Cain are for the first time on the outside looking in. They have to suffer watching to inept and stupid detective Take Their Place Who Could not detect anything even if it came up to him and bopped him on the head. Added to Which, Pleasant is getting some serious strife from kenspeckle about putting a 14 year old child into danger.
In this book, teleporter Are Being Murdered one by one and no-one knows why. It gets to the point where there is only one left teleporter - a young teenager who is cocky, arrogant and refuses any help from the Sanctuary. Pleasant and Cain start to figure out why the teleporter are being targeted but neither the Sanctuary or Their inept detective are interested in listening.
When They do find out what is going on, They link it to the Faceless Ones, a race of monsters who are waiting at a gate to be let back into the world. If That happens, it's the end of the world as we know it. But the duo are hampered by the factthat a spy is in the Sanctuary feeding information back to the enemy. They have to find the spy as well as stop the gate from opening to let the Faceless Ones back to rule over humanity.
The ending is a big shock and sets us all up for the next book. It shows indeed the Pleasant series is far from over and the best may be yet to come
