In this story, no pathos, no misery, no good feelings dripping cutesy. No, that's true, raw, personal testimonies as usual with Despentes. We do not get bored for a second.
The story: Vernon, former store recognized and appreciated by his clients, was shot as much by the digital industry. He did not want to start too much shaking and allowed himself to live on his savings and alloc. It was already unknowingly on the slippery slope of decommissioning and when it realizes at age 45, it's too late to resettle in employment. The novel begins there by his expulsion from its housing.
Then Despentes V offers a portrait gallery of hallucinatory realism. Yes, they exist all these people and that's what is wonderful in this novel: the author makes us live and breathe these characters, we see them, feel them, touch them almost. Tour succulent turn exhilarating, funny, hérissants, touching, moving, Vernon those friends or acquaintances take us on a wild round about Him (with a reference to the character of Kiko, terrible!). Sometimes people will like , troubleshoot the other or as to use him because he has something that many people seek.
This thing, no one knows if it really has value, not even Vernon. The latter will however over novel flow into decay and we with him, so that risk is tangible in our society.

For those who have not yet read Subutex Vernon, go, go. Less disillusioned, cynical and deep as Houellebecq but for the most entertaining shot, touching and just as much right on target.
