That may of course be a matter of opinion. Some like "Beauty and the Beast" much rather, the other "Arielle". I find the best bell-ringer.
This is mainly through this sublime, over vast Main Theme which you get almost continuously to hear: mighty choir, bombastic orchestra deposits, Mighty bells ... No other Disney theme I've ever had such goosebumps!
The mere 6-minute opener "The Bells of Notre Dame" (or the bells of Notre Dame) is a pure goosebumps guarantor. By contrast, the rather smaller issues to Quasimodo (once) and Esmeralda are (God, your children) smaller accessories.
The songs are generally in order. Nevertheless Menken had certainly better in store. What especially pleases:
The bells of Notre Dame, Kunterbunter day, the Court of Miracles and of course the mighty divided in 2 parts "Heaven's Light / The fire of hell". First, the Main Theme comes softly and auspiciously ... Quasimodo sings a little ballad about love and Geschmalz ... This part is checked quickly ... because it follows the dark contrast with the "fires of hell" - Frollo number , And here the mighty Main Theme is fully exploited. The nastiest Disney Villian gets the most ingenious villain number spendiert- so must that be! Frisson is assured.
With "one-off" and "God, your children" and "A guy like you" I could start at least. From musically the first two are clearly top but me too sentimental ... Just typical Disney. And the gargoyle number "A guy like you" is precisely the kind of loosening Track comic sidekicks ... Also typical Disney.
However, it understood Menken especially in the epic, erdgewaltigen Klimax to outline skillfully during the final battle, the loosening, comedic moments. Because "right of asylum" is undoubtedly the best thing Menken has ever made. Huge, gloomy, bombastisch- simply overwhelming. I think only of Mulan OST by Jerry Goldsmith could trigger similar enthusiasm with me in this case. The absolute out tip! And with "And he commanded eradicate all sin" he shoots finally the cake. Pure madness, sheer Bombast- never the last fight, or the death of a Disney antagonist was so grand backed musically. After the grandiose coupling with the recapitulation follows the first song. Round perfect ending ...
Conclusion:
Of course all this is just my humble opinion. However, I hold the bell-ringer for Menkens ambitious work. Disney would have been just a little more consistent and have the movie still made a little darker ... It would have been incredibly positive impact on Menkens music. Consider here a family film in front of you. And for Menken has made the best of it. Incidentally, I found both the German and the original English soundtrack very successful. Some songs I like actually better in the German version. Above all, I'd like to emphasize Heinz Rennhack as Clopin. He just liked better than Paul Kandel in the original. For me Heidi Mollenhauer like much better than Esmeralda. Sorry, but I find Ute Lemper's voice does not match the character. Fans love please forgive me.
Furthermore, I would also like to advise purely listening times in the musical version. I'm not the big musical fan. But the Hunchback excited here.
A very, very big score to be no one should miss!
