I read this book in the 90's (and I refer to this edition) and another more specifically devoted to marine survival (shipwrecked in Filipacchi). I liked the very educational construction: a story with its problems, a series of conclusions about human behavior (essential) and preventive and curative measures, relatively comprehensive information to scientific and technical and equipment. This information is required, how to act intelligently without understanding the phenomena involved ?. The stories are truly exemplary: panic in groups, the man overboard recovered by a submarine ... that are not about to thrill but an illustration of what can save or destroy him. Do not forget that Xavier Maniguet is a doctor, an adventurer in several sense (remember the team of secret agents of SDECEE who had participated in the operation of the Rainbow Warrior by traveling to NZ sailing from nvelle Caledonia. ..elle had shared the rental of a tourist boat passing by, guess who?). In summary this is not primarily a field guide (which would be pretty useless in my opinion) but a book to study to be ready in case ... Remember "voluntary castaway" of Bombard.
