Of course, images are strong and the pages of the novel intense emotions: the inn of the Admiral Benbow, Billy Bones, Pew, the black mark, apple barrel, the attack on the fort, Ben Gunn, combat Hands with Israel, the skeleton, the parrot of Silver and the menacing shadow of Captain Flint.
But this fantastic novel that is the matrix of modern adventure novels, is not a children's book. In children's books, morality is indicated "in the clear" at the end of the story. Here, nothing at all, just reminiscence nightmares and relief that the murderer Long John Silver got away with it. In Stevenson, the roles are not so clear that the protagonists making learning maturity under the eyes of the reader. The author has taken this scrambling technique in the excellent Black Arrow.
The key role is that of the young Jim Hawkins and we can see the change in his personality through the pages. It is only endearing and Long John Silver considers him as an adult, be it noted. The cunning and changing character of the old pirate is also well rendered by Stevenson to the end the reader know whether he is honest or not. Hard to give marks to young readers with such character!
I believe that to the imagination runs rampant, read this novel without any visual illustration. Not that I go bashing illustrators immense qualities of the various versions of the island to the Treasury, but the best examples are those in the head. It just an illustration: the card. In the version that I read (rock editions), it lacks. Stevenson was very fond because it is from this card he had himself realized that grew all the romantic plot.
To read, to read, to read and Yo yo yo, and a bottle of rum!
