The lens part of the older AF-D series, the auto focus works on the basis of an engine in the camera, the focus ring turns, as in the AF-D lenses usual, during focusing with always. Switching to manual focus by means of switches.
(Thus, the AF-D is not compatible with cameras such as the D40, D60, D5000, etc. - which the motor is missing)
On the D90, the autofocus is unfortunately quite slow, lt. Reports on the Internet should be primarily on the camera. The professional cameras focus obviously faster with the old lenses. In addition, my copy is prone to a slight front focus, resulting in open aperture to an increased number of blurred images.
The lens hood is included, is made of metal and is not yet screwed.
Overall, the objective is well made, but not excellent. Furthermore, I observed after a few months the inclusion of some grains of dust in the lens, which is annoying when a fixed focal length of this price. Mir is also not clear where and how the dust has penetrated, the definitely is located inside the lens.
But the lens is therefore bad? No!
On the contrary: This lens never I give forth again. The optical properties are outstanding! It can produce stunning images. The portraits are ... wow!
At maximum aperture (f / 1.8), the contrast is only minimally reduced and sharpness well. But the bokeh is stunning. Out-Of-Focus Details are displayed wonderfully soft even highlights cause buttery circles.
It is mMn the ideal portrait lens on APS-C. Of course, there's the 85mm AF-D 1.4, but which will cost 2.5 times and is correspondingly larger and heavier. Stopped down to f / 2.8 is the focus very well.
The sharpening level is so narrow that you can already leave the ears in image blurred, where the eyes are the focal plane at f / 1.8. Madness!
The lens can be used for available light photography, with me, the autofocus has cost in concert photography every now and then a good photo.
In turn, I expect, however, rather to my D90.
Locas, as usual high-intensity on ALL optics, also the +1000 lenses for all major system manufacturers.
Distortion: not visible.
Vignette: negligible Even at full aperture to APS-C
Conclusion? 5 Stars!
Despite the drawbacks, I give 5 stars because the are well known to the older AF-D lens series "disadvantages" (rod AF, rotating focus ring, no full-time AF override).
Optical performance is excellent and compares favorably with the 85mm AF-D not to shy away from 1.4. With this objective absolutely professional-looking portrait images can be shot with insanely soft background.
A strong buy recommendation, but you have to check the nature of the lens carefully and compare them with the list of requirements.
At the latest in terms of price / management relationship I have to say that this is a madness lens.
