The game is for 2 to 4 players designed, in which the armies of the Free Peoples (Gondor, Rohan, Elves, Dwarves, Northern Alliance) and the armies of the Shadow (Sauron, Isengard, South / Easterling) war on each other. The gameplay is similar to that of "risk", but is many times more complex and ingenious.
At the beginning of the game certain regions are allocated to the respective peoples. The huge game board corresponds to the map of Middle-earth with the different areas of peoples. Thus, Gondor is of Gondor units, Rohan Rohan units so occupied.
Each player has a number of Action Dice, which determine the further course of a round. Depending on the outcome of the dice, armies can be moved, units recruited, event cards are drawn or played. Certainly the luck factor plays in this cube principle a certain role, but by far as bad as you might not expect when you hear the word "cube".
Würfelglück play there rather in the fighting a bigger role. However, there are so many tactical options, such as the fight card and the leader of an army, that a good campaign strategy will mostly be rewarded accordingly.
Even with the victory conditions, the game shows very versatile: enabling both sides (Free Peoples and Shadow) win by military means or otherwise. The Free Peoples need to bring the ring to Mount Doom, while the shadows to try to prevent this by corrupting the Ring-bearer, so that he forfeited the Ring and Sauron brings victory.
Since the game is so complex and has so many ways I can not mention everything here. Due to this versatility the game is initially not very easy to understand and you have to read the rules of the game only just. And even then you have every now and then look up something in the first few games and it always come back to issues that need to be clarified. But if one has pushed through by these initial difficulties, you can experience a game that will provide a lot of evenings full of fun.
Last, it should be said that the game can be played while with up to 4 players, but is best suited for 2 players.
My conclusion: Each of the Lord of the Rings and likes to fight with board games and strategy is must buy this game - you will not regret it. If you like the game "Risk", you will love this game in my opinion, because the gameplay to that of "risk" is similar, only with a lot of improvements and meaningful changes. This game is a must-have and should be in every game collection.
