On the technical aspects, I will not go into, any potential buyer is very detailed tests in connection with any camera magazines on the Internet - with good to outstanding test results.
For whom this is now an appropriate camera?
Who just "snap" will, if necessary. Also with high resolution and good quality, you can do with this camera, but is certainly less expensive and more compact cameras that fulfill all his claims.
Who is interested in the possibility, aperture, shutter speed and ISO setting to be able to control themselves and thus operate independently of image design camera automatics, is well served with this camera. Of course there is in this segment now strong competition from mirrorless system cameras and compact high-end cameras with much larger sensors (up to full-frame chips), as it has the G15. Canon internally is the PowerShot G1X such a competitor.
So why the PowerShot G15? For me there are the following reasons:
- Compactness: Due to the completely retracted at rest lens and the rather small sensor, the G15 is much more compact than the system cameras just mentioned. But be careful, nevertheless, it is not a pocket camera!
- Ease of use: Almost all settings can be made with no or minimal interventions menu. The frequently used functions can be accessed via the mechanical wheels. Anyone who has a (Canon) reflex camera, will feel at home.
- Focal length range: With (mm film equivalent) 28-140 mm focal length has a universal camera for most situations here that with this 1.8 - 2.8 is currently strong light (and its relatively small sensor well compensated).
- Picture quality: The camera takes excellent pictures and needs before the competition does not hide, even if one or the other system camera or precious-Compact is here and there a bit better.
Who, like me, already an older camera from the PowerShot G-series had (in my case, the G11) would be in addition to the improved image quality of the lens (less distortion in wide-area) and the much faster autofocus, although it always not explicitly suitable for sports photography, but at last snapshot is suitable.
Whether you missed the swiveling monitor that the G11 had, everyone must know yourself. I do not need him really and am very happy with the twice as high definition new monitor - but be careful, be sure to install a protective film, because you can no longer be protected by folding the monitor.
Conclusion: For me personally, the PowerShot G15 is the ideal "Always-In-Camera" for demanding that do not want to rely on camera automatics - from the serious amateur to professional photographers. It is light and compact enough to be on every mountain tour in a backpack with me and will always be slung on vacation.
With its very good image quality, the universal focal range and the light intensity it is an ideal travel and reportage camera.
