TP-Link TL-MR3040 3G / 4G wireless router (2.4GHz, 150Mbit / s, USB 2.0, Travel Router (AP), WISP Client Router) (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

The TL-MR3040 3G wireless router is actually made to build a small wireless on the go using a USB wireless modem. However, it can also be used as an extension of an existing network with DSL connection.

Just as I have used the router. In a home network, there is currently only a router, which can be connected via LAN cable. This should be expanded to include the wireless component.

To make this possible, the mode of operation of the router must first be converted; it is configured by default for use as a mobile phone-based WLAN. So we do not need the function for which the device was actually made, but you could also infect a cellular modem (Surfstick) and set up the device so that it automatically switches to a failure of the landline connection to UMTS operation.

Scope of supply:

Router
Accumulator
Charging cable (USB)
Power Supply
Network Cable (!)
Quick Reference Guide

So everything unpacked. The packaging is very appealing, almost a bit of Articles with the bitten apple and can be reused good because no packaging units must be destroyed. That is perhaps quite handy because the device is designed for mobile use.

Inserting and invite First Battery. This goes quite quickly vonstatten, in my case, the battery was apparently also summoned. The router can also be operated during the charging process, which is important for my permanent stationary use. Care must be taken to ensure that each router the USB cable is firmly plugged in. The charging process is indicated by a diode.

The router has detected problems of my computers (Mac and Windows). Directly on the very clearly designed browser-based interface, I have found the appropriate function to change the operation mode and could also change wlan. (Utilised browser: Safari on Mac OS). I can not confirm that complicated and only direct connection to the computer that is possible on this point. Upon delivery, the router is still completely open and unprotected. But he's just very easy to reach.

The pretty little white boxes in this case has all the controls that you would expect at a major router. So there is no restrictions on the current configurations. On the contrary, I was surprised at the wide range of functions, which leaves nothing to be desired really. In addition, the surface is really very well done and self-explanatory, though available only in English.

Flight restrictions on access to the admin were configured awarded SSID, DHCP set up. (Here has the router also has the ability to assign an IP fixed to a MAC address. I have a wireless printer on the network, in which this is important because it with DHCP had been problems and the fixed assignment of an IP in an otherwise DHCP configured network brought nothing.)

In a few minutes was the network expansion and works so far with good coverage (from cellar to the 1st floor with 2 concrete ceilings) perfectly. In general, fewer clients relates only to the available bandwidth in the mobile operation. When used as a network expansion for the DSL is not a problem and just not limited in principle, the number of devices that can be registered. I can the way so my network also connect to all other hubs or routers via Ethernet cable and operate my wireless everywhere, when each hub or router for cable connections is not restricted access.

The Abstract

+ Compact dimensions
+ Meaningful operating status diodes (!)
+ A / off switch (does not even have my stationary routers)
+ Battery
+ Operating via USB of the computer
+ Good range
++ Very clear user interface (English)
++ Large functions (operating modes, DHCP configuration, MAC access restrictions, DHCP Range, parental control, logging, all common encryption methods, distribution of network resources, overview of connected clients, ...)
+ Excellent Package
+ Very good workmanship
+ Also looks very good (Does it matter? I like the white glossy casing definitely) On the product side, the device is properly displayed, not in the TP-Link function summary table in the production information, however.

- The USB charging cable must be plugged in, otherwise the battery will not charge.

Conclusion:

In my application, the small device does an excellent service and well worth the price as an extension department. (We had no choice, the existing router is provided by the landlord and can not be replaced.)
