The true story of theoretical physics?

No more physical! : The Failure of String Theory (Paperback)

Customer Review

I am not a physician and am independent of any controversial aspect (contrary he seems to other reviews for this book authors).
This is for me the first time I became aware of such a realistic panorama of theoretical physics. Very accurate and detailed
(No mathematical formula flashy), it addresses fundamental problems on the "flight forward" of physical theories, from the early 20th
century, while highlighting the real advances and revolutions confirmed by experiment (relativity and quantum mechanics, specifically to reconcile).

Indeed, we must recognize that many books are confined to a single theoretical point of view (in quantum physics, cosmology, etc.)
giving the impression to the reader that "this is it, we found the end of physics". Or Lee Smolin proves the opposite with great precision
very enlightening. It is deep enough and Technical unlike many texts of "popular science" written so that the reader may believe smart, finally while being somewhat abused. It is possible that Lee Smolin also settling accounts, as suggested by other opinions (two identical notices that likewise non credible indeed if one delves a bit, and irrelevant in the context Amazon) but the reader also has the right to know these internal conflicts (which exist in any discipline).

Lee Smolin also raises very fundamental problems existing on the nature of the laws of physics (he is the space-time continuous or discrete, that naive conceptions of classical geometric space is an illusion already in identified by Einstein, but still relevant, etc ...). You can not summarize here the rich content of the book that leads to promising `` loop quantum gravity '' due to physicists Abhay Ashtekar, Carlo Rovelli and Lee Smolin.

The editor in the fourth coverage summary refers only to the position of Lee Smolin on string theory and seems to believe that it is the goal of the book (there is also the subtitle of the book). Is this still a commercial approach to "make present"? because in fact it is only one aspect of the entire history developed in this book, which stops it a few years ago when Lee Smolin says in substance that it puts great hope in the discovery of the Higgs boson Otherwise it would be very painful for the physical !!!

Must add that the book is prefaced by the mathematician Alain Connes; there are not a lot of physical books may rely on such support.

A strongly advise any reader wanting to get out of "the single thought" scientific. Then the reader is certainly better equipped to address other works published since these many aspects of physics.
