Customer Review

Shortly beforehand, I would like to address in this review less on technical details - you already found on the website of Olympus - but rather to introduce touch and essential facts in practice. I photograph for 35 years, have developed manually as a temporary worker at shops still images and now work as a layout and image designers. Photoshop is my daily bread.

After years as a second camera for DSLR a Olympus XZ-1 bought Kampaktkamera and thanks RAW format and the light-heavy F1.8 lens made fairly decent pictures, I dropped my SLR increasingly at home in your pocket. By changing over to the PEN E-PL5 and me testweise undelivered PEN E-PL6 and the acquisition of a fixed focal length lens-I am convinced of the compact format of the camera system. The picture quality is almost identical to the weighty DSLR brethren thanks to the identical image sensors and the implemented technology. Those who do not pursue the profession of a professional photographer, will be found in future no more arguments, longer cling to the Globigen counterparts when times vorlässt the full-format cameras outside.

Originally I wanted to change to Fuji, I was deeply impressed by the image quality of the system cameras, which is good to check with Photoshop. Unfortunately Fujifilm can offer only a few lenses and with the pivoting of the monitors can not shine all models. Here the Olympus PEN series was a brilliant move, because all cameras show a flexible touch screen, the technology is mature, the image sensors offer the full format, the case with value and the lenses are excellent.

While the market for professional cameras from Canon and Nikon is stagnating, almost collapses, what I know of my famous Canon / Nikon promoters under his hand, blows with the Olympus PEN series to fight. In particular, the wide range of excellent Zuiko objects, of which I appreciate more and more fixed focal length with their shallow depth of field, it eliminates the need to haul large suitcases around with you. In addition, the PEN series is a real stunner in fact and the rich tripping give me the confidence to keep a solid tool in your hand, what the test results, such as under dkamera.de also confirm.

Both cameras shine with a technical equipment that enable me every possible shooting situation such as 1/4000 second exposure time (E-P5 However, 1/8000 sec.), To ISO 25600 at almost zero noise up to ISO 6400, HDR, manual focus 14-fold magnification, 8 frames / sec., live exposure (when shooting at night can be observed the exposure on the screen and individually controlled) or foldable touch-screen. In part I find now that implemented art and scene-filter very helpful. For similar effects when they riff so, you sit with Photoshop but sometimes quite a long time about it. I like these filters always better. However, images with these effects is not in RAW format are stored. You have to make do with JEPG.

Compared to the E-PL7 are found only marginal differences in the technical equipment. Some are 2 Artfilterfunktionen longer exists, in which case the filter "Partial Color" is a real highlight. Also, the touch screen has a higher resolution. In addition, the E-PL7, the so-called Focus Peaking, particularly about the Friends of the manual focus dial should be happy. For the E-PL6 27 RAW images shoots in succession, the E-PL7 can only process 20.

With both models, the images taken can be transferred to your smartphone via WIFI. The E-PL7 can also remote. So you can trigger via mobile images and video recordings. But it does not have all the features of this manual adjustment available. The key, as Time or aperture choice are selectable vie mobile. This does not provide the e-PL6.

The monitor can be folded at the E-PL7 purpose of self-absorption down. In the E-PL6 the monitor is folded over the camera. This speaks for the E-PL6, since self-portraits, the camera can be placed on a level surface. This road goes to the E-PL7 not because the monitor needs to be folded down. If the camera is additionally screwed on a tripod, the tripod in the e-PL7 is in front of the touch screen. No good solution. Monitor up is better. The E-PL6 has an additional angle so that the screen up and can be pulled away from the housing to the rear simultaneously. That makes sense in macros or in close-ups, which are difficult to access. The E-PL7 can be only 80 ° upwards and swing 180 ° downwards. Who likes to Selfies, but benefits from the folding down monitor.

Which goal was pursued with the almost simultaneous publication of the two sisters? Is it because that the e-PL6 already in Asian countries was previously available and is in the meantime already had a reload its sleeve, but refused to give the E-PL6 for Europe? I dont know. Those who place at least on even more aesthetics with an e-PL7 value, gets an almost 50 grams heavier and slightly larger camera, because the E-PL7 mother of PEN series, the E-P5 comes closest, though not all in technical terms. Of course, the camera is also more expensive.

Who wants to buy the camera with the new super flat pencake lens, must nevertheless in the e-PL7 100, - shell out more. Then you should consider whether the additional investment makes sense at all in an almost identical technique. Those like me who likes to do macro shots, or crawling around on the ground and would fold the monitor flexible, could get along better with the E-PL6. And who likes to have the camera when traveling, for hiking or trekking here, drives safely with the E-PL6 better since the camera is compact and lightweight. In contrast, the E-PL7 looks better, can be remote via smartphone and offers some great filter programs more. However, this camera creates a slight noise when taking pictures. This is the anti-shock filter geschultet which is to provide clear images in shaky situations. Of course you can switch off the function. Then relax!

Conclusion: If you want to impress with photo envious with his system camera, the E-PL7 might want to call as his own. Those looking for something compact and lighter, should choose the cheaper E-PL6. Both cameras are processed solid and allow professional images, especially with the fixed focal lengths of Zuiko lenses. I have now been published some pictures in magazines. With 16 MB in raw format to a whopping A4 images can make in high resolution format with 350 dpi. As a next step, I would like 60 instead of 30 fps for HD video recording. So there is still room for further developments in it. So we look forward to the e-P6 or e-P7, but then good for 1.000, - will flow over the countertop.
