Kind of Blue (CD)

Customer Review

Released in 1959, Kind of Blue is the legendary Miles Davis album, which one could say it was one of the greatest albums in the history of modern jazz, and why not in the history of jazz, and why not in the history of music? In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine published a ranking of the 500 best albums of all time. The list includes records of all kinds, but the vast majority of rock and pop. Yet Kind of Blue, a rare jazz album of the ranking, appears in the 12th position.
The special sticks to the technical exploited here by the composer and his musicians: the modal jazz known as MD had already explored in Milestone.
In addition to this achievement, we note especially that ç'est an album superb, with the famous So what and intro a bit mysterious that leaves nothing to foreshadow later and some notes on the bass that structures the whole theme, tubesque All Blue and poignant Flamenco sketches suggesting the taste of Miles Davis for hispanisantes sounds and announces future Sketches of Spain and Siesta.
Luminous album in which the musicians play with a spontaneity and a breathtaking complementarity. This their seems so easy! Especially when we know that during the recording session, they had played no pieces before. No repetition, and one take for each track 'except Flamenco sketches.
The disc is recorded in a period of-between. The first quintet (MD, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones) was reformed some time ago by Miles which s'était assistant violist Julian "Canonball" Aderley 'for which MD appears sideman in another legendary album, Something else. So it was now a sextet that was driving the trumpeter who recorded the famous Milestone (1958). But at the time of Kind of Blue, the band began again to dissolve. Philly Joe Jones is replaced by Jimmy Cobb and Red Garland with Bill Evans (white in the group's big advocate of music black!), Except on the second track played by Wynton Kelly 'that end up on Someday my prince will come .
After the huge success of Porgy and Bess, it was thought that Miles Davis had reached the summit of his art. We had yet seen anything!
