I enjoyed this book, even if I find it less exciting than "The Adversary" (the same author). A recurring theme of E.Carrère back again, always treated with great delicacy, that of stifled truth of the lie as a bulwark to the discovery of horror. What the author seeks to show through this story is that lying is worse than the terrible truth revealed (to be discovered by reading the book). Perhaps it is because of this need to talk untold family secrets that the author became a talented writer. It is this aspect again touched me: story of a tortured child who tries to uncover the truth, condemned by a sordid and deceptive medium. Nothing is directly revealed, everything is suggested. Questionings persist after this reading, a mystery that is difficult to break: between fantasy and harsh reality.
