The story, full of twists and much convoluted, keeps us in suspense throughout the almost 700 pages that make up the book. But it takes just as much to history as the amazing cast of characters who populate the novel. Whether finesse and borrowing emotions (I think Marian, for me the most endearing character), high color (as Count Fosco, worth alone seeing it) or racked with anxieties (Mr Fairlie), all make the fascinating story.
Betrayals, thwarted ambitions, family secrets and conspiracies of all kinds, these are the strong elements that punctuate the book in parallel with more noble and tender romance.
If we add to all this a more elegant style who knows skillfully combine a somewhat quaint and lively and fluid writing, this book is a true success.
