A poetic novel

Some navaient never seen the sea, but yet they sétaient taken on faith déchanges correspondence to a marriage with a Japanese party seek a better life in the US Banker, businessmen, accountants, all dreamed of this new horizon promised by their adventurer fiance, that one who would tear them to their peaceful country life, or an austere existence in the city All nétaient not happy, but all sétaient embedded with the confidence of their youth. These young Japanese find in America a different reality; spouses equally laborious and poor that the family that they had to say goodbye despite themselves, demanding working conditions, a binding marital life, and social situation détrangers and sometimes pariahs.

Some sinvestissent and manage to sintégrer. Some will fail and remain islands in the middle of an ocean that is hostile to them. Some have children and discover the joy of making a home for them anyway. Others will fail. Some like. Others die. Sometimes dépuisement. Sometimes exhausted they end their days

Julie Otsuka dune melodious voice tells the fate of these women. A voice that is multiple, which traces the journey of a people, of women held by the vagaries of their lives at a difficult crossroads dune story that transcends.

In 1941, Air Base Pearl Harbor was bombed. The Japanese become enemies, mistrust and rejection objects. Excluded, threatened, abused, some of these women try to escape, to look after their own, to survive. This is the voice of the silent struggle, led by simple and courageous people that the author is trying to make in this beautiful novel, crowned in 2012 the Prix Femina abroad.

The choice of the title, "Some navaient never seen the sea" conveys something of the naivety of the Japanese married to a destiny which nauraient have imagined. This book gives life or makes audible, the sad song of those who have suffered in silence, and often forgotten history.
