It's So Hard To Tell (CD)

Customer Review

This CD has been reissued recently, and it was hitherto very difficult to get it. It is a real pleasure because Karen Dalton is an artist as important as unknown. Having worked with Fred Neil, she had an amazing voice, it is almost impossible to relate to his physique. Many compare her to Billie Holiday or Janis Joplin, but in the words of one of the guitarists who accompanied him, "Janis Joplin, next to Karen sounded like Betty Boop." In the first approach, his voice sounds very difficult. In reality, it is very easy to get carried away by the deep gorge of votes on pieces also shocking that 'In the evening'. The music here can be described as folk but also takes jazz accents, which is of course accentuated by the intonations of Karen. This is a beautiful melting pot of American music, whether its blan side (the country, folk) or its dark side (blues, jazz).
I would compare the emotion felt at first listen this masterpiece to the one that can cause a Nick Drake album or Joni Mitchell heard for the first time.
Karen Dalton died in 1992, but it is not too late to give it the recognition it deserves.
