Although warned by the modest reputation of this case, I could not resist the charm of some names: those of the Staatskapelle Dresden, Seefried, of Streich, Böhm. But, for once at least, muted trumpets of Fame do not lie. The integral of Rosenkavalier enjoys the personality of the great artists mentioned above, and this is not nothing, but not their interpretative genius at its peak. There is neither concept nor bias particular stylistic or even enthusiasm make up for that absence. Especially since, around Seefried and Streich, if we find in DFD Faninal or Valzacchi Gerhard Unger, the smoky Ochs Kurt Böhme does not mark the spirits and especially, especially, the Marschallin saddening Marianne Schech lowered the average. Finally, the stereo vintage 1958 Deutsche Grammophon, a little gray and not very tonally balanced, does not drink to forget the Staatskapelle our frustrations, unlike the Ring directed by Janowski, where Zauberharfe Saxon fascinates often. Karl Böhm, meanwhile, continued to deepen its approach Rosenkavalier, as evidenced by a beautiful Salzburg recording. In short, this box can not be competitive with those of Decca (Erich Kleiber) and EMI (Karajan) as discographic landmark. But he keeps his own place, that of a cross-road, especially against that of the general. For those who already know their Rosenkavalier and want to be seduced by Seefried of Octavian and Sophie Streich.
