An old gem in new splendor

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (CD-ROM)

Customer Review

First of all it is securely attached to tell something about the background of the game. Therefore, a brief introduction: in Ocarina of Time is originally an N64 game released in 1998. It has been used both by critics and players as one of the best, if not the most touted the best game. The one may agree or disagree, but the fact is that Ocarina of his time set new standards and has shaped the genre. Thus, it has earned the title of a milestone rightly so!
It has been repeatedly ported to the Gamecube, where it both on a bonus disc of the limited edition Zelda: Wind Waker appeared Edition, as well as an available only through Club Nintendo Collector's Edition Disc. Since 2007 it is also acquirable via the Virtual Console of Wii.
Well, it turns for a few certain question: Is it worth it then at all to add itself the 3DS version? My answer is yes, because this is the first remake in the true sense, while the previous versions have been virtually taken over directly.

Before I go into the differences from the original, I want to lose for the OOT newcomers a few words about the story:
My take on the role of boys link that quite a peaceful life in the forest village Kokiri leads so far - until one day he will plagued by nightmares and visited on behalf of St. Deku tree of the fairy Navi.
Since that day, things started happening to beat: the Deku Tree is cursed and Monster Search the camp, which is due to the wickedness of a man named Ganondorf. This now has to stop ...
A task, which is - you want this really explore everything - no less than drag 40-50Std can.

What's next for me the most important story for a great gaming experience, of course, the gameplay itself, so to speak, the "way to play the game."
As a typical action-adventure Zelda is characterized by certain factors:
The exploration of a large world is an important part is not uncommon you really have to use brains to get ahead. This includes the insertion of various objects in the right place and at the right time. Also central point is the interaction with NPCs (non-player-character =), which offer pure nonsense or background information on the Zelda universe to important information or even necessary objects. This one is not limited to continuously follow the story until it is over, but will be reflected in many side quests, for one does not necessary with, but useful things like extended power is rewarded. Special item to Ocarina of Time is, as the name suggests, the ocarina. The learning of music is essential.
The "Action" part again are the fights in the game; especially in boss battles of skill and reaction is called for, without losing sight of the tactics of the eyes. Unlike RPGs, it is not possible here to level up your character, so you can rely on nothing more than his skills. It is all done from the third-person perspective (= third person), ie, you see the character completely and you feel like you're behind him positioned. To look around or to precise targets with weapons such as bows and arrows can be divided into a first-person perspective change, during which link themselves but can not move.

The control is easy to learn and I think is very intuitive. You move with the analog stick in any direction, for faster progress can be rolled Link Tell A button. A is also known as the Action button - it is used for addressing the NPC, or for the assessment and picked up various "props".
Sword blows it executes with B, while you can assign additional weapons and items from your inventory free the buttons Y and X as well as two additional fields on the touch screen. Enemy attacks with the R shoulder button, the sign blocked.
During battle to let opponents to target with the L shoulder button, outside of fighting the button to adjust the view is used.
New to the list is in the 3DS version, that the objectives of the first-person view is now also possible with the pivoting of the 3DS. Originally used to the analog stick, which is also still can do, because the swivel option can be switched on optionally. Unfortunately the 3D effect suffers, because you have to look at the device known from a certain point of view for this.

This leads us finally to a comparison between N64 original and remake!
First, of course, falls the upgraded optical eye. The graphics are sharper, the colors much richer and brighter, the characters and the overall environment have more detail on. I've read that many have complained about the outdated graphics when Remake - sure was thus not all taken out of the 3DS, but just in a direct comparison with the original N64 falls to an extreme difference. The walls, water and grasses look thanks to new textures now look like just such; Facial features convey more emotion than before.
In addition, both the intro and the cut scenes have been completely revised. They are of course remained the same content, but the changed camera settings set the whole scene better than usual.
The 3D effect is doing great in any design. When Ganondorf an energy ball flings me right in the face - wonderful;)
Only said problem during pivoting to complain about here, but does not fall into too much weight, because you can issue the option yes.

The soundtrack fortunately remained the same. Ocarina of Time is home to one of my favorite soundtracks. Zelda composer Koji Kondo is master of his craft, which is certainly confirmed by the fact that his compositions own orchestral concerts have been dedicated.
From the beautiful, gentle melodies of the ocarina songs up to the epic final boss BGM everything is easily offered here. Each emotional, humorous or dangerous situation is perfectly highlighted. Oots sounds have also been immortalized on several CDs, one of which I have personally 2. So I am really thrilled! As check out tip may be mentioned here struggle theme the Serenade of Water, Song of Storms, Gerudo Valley and King Dodongos - the only way, if someone wants to get an idea of the versatility in the first place.

In addition to graphics and sound, there are other things that are worthy of mention.
So the menu has been redesigned and is now neatly clearer and faster to use. Now you can use for example the Iron Boots on a regular Itemknopf, instead of having an extra switch to the equipment menu. Well accomplished!
For newcomers also a help function has been built: at various locations of the game are knowledge stones that give the player "visions". These show a video of Link as he goes to certain places to find something, or performs other actions. Practiced Zelda players will make use of this function no use while it certainly is a nice help for everyone else, so you do not cast a look at solutions.
Furthermore, it was the lack of rumble feature, the one used to use with a Rumble Pak, balanced. A particular item in the game made it possible to display by vibration various secrets. Since the 3DS does not have such a feature, an icon of the object is displayed on the screen instead. Attention was paid to every little thing!
The next change is to me quite frankly not very clear: some names have been changed. The scarecrows Byron and Balzac are now Paul and Peter, while the carpenters are no longer named after the Beatles, power and titanium gloves now the name of silver and gold gloves. And what I personally pity: from Killa Ohmaz made one Infernal witches Armada, the Sexy Thermo Hexy has become a double dynamite attack. The latter could perhaps be explained by the Youth Protection ...? I find excessive, because the name just sounded only funny, but this loss I will get over.
By the way: many glitches (= game error that can be exploited to perform unintended actions in the game) that already existed there previously were, extra leave. The aim is to ensure that indulge their nostalgia and old hands can still feel "at home". For example it is still possible to reach as an adult Link in Jabu-Jabu belly.

An extra section, I want to dedicate one of the most interesting innovations in this is the Boss mode. As the name suggests, can already be passed boss battles - with the exception of the final struggle - in any order and as often as you want to deny again! Besides running a clock that records the record times. If you have defeated each boss least one more time, the real challenge is unlocked - the boss battle mode in which all of the bosses want to be defeated in succession without a break. The difficulty is this, among other things the fact that only a certain number of hearts and items are available while you were probably much better equipped in actual gameplay.

At the end it's all about something that was a major selling point for me: after the end of Ocarina is the other version of the game - Master Quest - unlocked. At first glance, it's the same as the original game, however, was working here at the difficulty properly.
Master Quest was initially intended for the 64DD, an extension for the N64. However, since these flopped, the game never saw the light of day - until the limited edition of Zelda: Wind Waker came with. It differs to Ocarina of that dungeon to be solved in another way, many Skulltulas and items are in other places and that more and stronger opponents appear.
On the 3DS version of Master Quest further, more serious changes have been made: the opponents do double damage and the entire game world is mirrored. Very welcome change, I think, makes the other way round again a very different impression. The Boss mode was also built here.
All in all, I have all the innovations well received, whatever it is sure that I knew almost by heart Ocarina. So new puzzles and obstacles are definitely welcome!

So my ... "small" review would also come to the end. I hope it was informative enough for one, and the other in the text what they are looking ... :)

Who the text is too long, let him read my conclusion here: BUY! THE! GAME! It has lost none of its brilliance, on the contrary, and I really put it all to my heart, which is also just a bit of what can do with action adventure. Now I hope to still an equally grandiose remake of my favorite Zelda, Majora's Mask!
