Initially, the units are designed with interesting creative skills. Especially good is the fact that each ranger has a melee attack. Of course you should avoid if possible that the unarmored Archer fights with his fists, but it increased atmosphere and tactical diversity immense. In addition, units which dominate both near and ranged automatically distribute, in the struggle in one way or the other role. The skills one has many probably never seen in this form in a strategy game. Every nation has the ways and means (the Schlangenklan example, two buildings, the Lotus three different spirits), which give a unit with a unique ability. A new semi-skilled ability replaces the old, making the tactical diversity is increased considerably.
Further units are thereby enhanced, by visiting the different production buildings. An archer in the dojo (barracks) becomes a dragon warrior. If you send this to the barn, it is a mounted dragon fighter. The latest addition in the fight collected yin and yang points, the special forces of the peoples unlock (the Drachenklan gets an attack missed, resembling a bomb made of C & C).
However, there are some very big problems. Control of the units is very hard-due and no comparison to the strategy games, which have established themselves online. In addition, the speed can be produced with the supply depends not only on the resources of rice and water, but also the number of already available units. Every game is therefore very lengthy and down to wrestle an opponent in his own base is much more strenuous than it would actually be necessary. The trend continues in single player against the AI. Furthermore, almost all units can be built from the outset, only the heroes change with time. Combined with a fairly uninspired level design (all the time the same procedure with the aim to destroy the enemy base), lapping the missions without highlights to himself. Of course, the setting remains great and the story is well told, but when all motivation arises only from the cutscenes, something has gone wrong.
All in all, a solid game Battle Realms, but for all their love is not a must-buy. Here enormous potential was available, but which could not be properly implemented. As an additional note for all people who have found yet to Battle Realms and the extension of the Winter Wolf favor Liquid Entertainment has with "The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring" is another, very similar game in the Lord of the Rings universe released. The deficiencies were corrected though not completely, but the graphics and the gameplay is largely the same.
