CPU:
====
DS214 + = 1.33GHz ARM dual-core CPU
DS214play = 1.60GHz Intel Atom dual-core CPU
According to the benchmark test by Synology with respect. Transfer rates (DS214 + / DS214 / DS214play) makes the DS214 + the race, which is DS214play despite the higher CPU frequency and thus the weakest on the 3rd place. So if no transcoding, SD card slot and Intel CPU required is operated with the DS214 + or DS214 better. Main criterion why I look at the DS214 + grew were the lockable drive bays and the hardware encryption module.
Test environment:
=============
(Windows 8.1 PC) + (DS214 + with 2xWD30EZRX 3TB in JBOD) + (Gigabit network)
Transfer rates without encryption
==================================
20GB large file:
Download 90-100 MB / s; CPU 30-40%
upload about 90 MB / s; CPU up to 75%
Thousands of small files (JPEG, etc.):
Download: 25-40 MB / s; CPU 20%
Upload: 25-40 MB / s; CPU 50%
Transfer rates with encryption
=================================
20GB large files:
download 30 MB / s; CPU 70%
upload about 15 MB / s; CPU up to 75%
Power consumption:
===============
In idle about 20 watts.
Under load I measured in the test 24 Watt
Costs for in 24/7 45 EUR per year
Note:
========
My tests are exclusively linked to a single PC and the Synology DS214 +, the whole as with several clients looks I can not test.
I have, therefore, tested link aggregation with 2 network cables, respect. Performance brought it in my case no advantage which makes probably only noticeable with multiple clients.
By floating point / FPU which have the DS214 + (and also all the other 214 models), should greatly speed especially creating and displaying thumbnail images and the upload / download many small files. Overall, it seems to me the DS214 + very perfomant, even at very high CPU load can the NAS still operate properly, am really excited.
Security:
===========
ct 1/2014 the safety of NAS (DSM 3.x) is criticized on the Internet; Access should only be done over VPN.
