Certainly: the latest on the streaky album "Cyberpunk" came Billy Idol in 1993 commercially stumble, and as you can see his recently published biography, the last decades have not always been easy. Unquestionably he had always been his fans, but by the general public, he was less attention.
Anyway, with Kings and Queens of the Underground to Idol announces musical back, and damn ax, it shows that he (again, or still, as you want to see it) draufhat it.
I was very skeptical about this album, but I think Billy Idol here delivers a great and coherent work, the songs are unmistakably BILLY IDOL, but sound somewhat mellowed with age, thoughtful and sometimes melancholy - and sometimes gentle.
Before now someone yells that Billy Idol has hereby lost its bite, two things are to be noted: first, this album has enough rock pieces, and secondly, Billy Idol had already always a distinct pop list ... inasmuch as he remains on KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND quite loyal. It would be silly to worlds when Billy Idol had its striking paraded before 30 (!) Years rowdiness as soon 60 years not saved a little and would still take the same notch.
Stylistically BILLY IDOL places here so the front of what you can expect from him and what he class can easily - situates straighte songs with frequent catchy melodies, influenced by Steve Stevens Guitar and somewhere in the intersection of pop, rock and all I care punk rock. The experimental phase of "cyberpunk" is far behind him, but sometimes comes of course electronics. The whole is dominated of course by the distinctive vocals, which makes clear immediately who is on the mic here. The songs are as known by him quite abwechlungsreich, BILLY IDOL combined already in the 80s like many styles.
Most of the songs of KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND have but also works on the earlier albums well, simultaneously KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND also has a very particular atmosphere, just lyrically reflected BILLY IDOL lot and sings about the trials and tribulations of his almost 60-year life.
No question: this comeback I've wanted from Billy Idol - it sounds like anyway BILLY IDOL should sound, perhaps a little softer, a little more thoughtful, but not absolutely exhausted, but definitely confident and self-assured.
One can undoubtedly say about this comeback: ITS A NICE DAY TO START AGAIN !!!
