Conclusion after the end of the single-player campaign

Battle Worlds: Kronos (computer game)

Customer Review

I belong to the people who have supported the project on the crowdfunding platform. Memories of the Battle Isle series had led me to and because it should be playable for casual gamers without fast gaming PC, I have send the game a few dollars.

Now I have played through the 13 missions comprehensive campaign yesterday and can express myself extensively about this game. The multiplayer part I have not touched, nor the three Challenge Maps, where you for example just have to hold out just as long as possible. Even with Battle Isle has me at the time of the pure fun of tactics against the computer and the campaign tied most. The qualities of the multiplayer mode can therefore read in the other reviews, I will confine myself here to the single-player fun after work.

1) Playability: The game should run on about 5-year-old systems according to the manufacturer. I promise partially exhausted by I'm with a 3 year old PC but for weak onboard graphics ("Intel HD Graphics" on Core i5) competed. As a resolution, I have chosen to windowed mode with anything less than 1280x1024 pixels so I can see something from the desktop, such as the Windows volume control or a web browser, including taskbar.
It was noted that the game very delayed responding to the inputs and the scrolling is very slow. I then switched off first all graphics settings or set to minimum. Visually I have hardly noticed a change. Perhaps the edges are smoothed otherwise chic, but as "Rarely player" not struck me that. It seems to me less on the presentation that still looks very chic, as to the playability. With the new settings, the game can now play wonderful liquid. The animations have become very beautiful, the duration of which bother me at all. Many complain about here, that they would like to switch it off. You take per attack maybe 4 seconds. If then bursts of enemy tanks or crashing the plane to the ground, I can still watch the also the 100th time were good, as it always is a sense of achievement. The game was initially delivered bugged, after about a week it was from 1.07 but as far as patched, that it was playable. Here and there is still a few illustrative texts (not influencing play), but those are blemishes. One can fortunately be a Show Hexfeldraster so that you can count the better fields for important traits, such as on the water very helpful. The cutscenes have however geruckelt mad at me. After a few seconds Diverged audio and video. Is not it beautiful, but the story does not diminish. The background story is always just a minor matter and not very spectacular. The game mechanics is compared to Battle Isle slightly different because it is not the round binary 'attack / movement "there. That bothers but in any way and you get used to it. Only ranged units shoot back even if they are bombarding even remotely fight, I have often times forgotten and thereby conceded unnecessary harm. Because even put old habits in the blood.

2.) Difficulty: Many miss here the adjustability of a difficulty level. I must say that I, as an old Battle Isle Hare, who recently Historyline 1914-18 (yes, the old BI branch) has played through the difficulty find enjoyable. I had no mission to play more than once or reload a saved game. Therefore, the game is actually too simple. But it should also not frustrate, and the computer is often very adept at and use all possible official tactics of the game (terminals, keeping a distance from the artillery, off key units first, ...), so that he does not win a bestows. However, anyone who thinks before his face, often times among fields and not blind all units rushing to the enemy who can not lose. Where Battle Isle still raised the difficulty with opponents masses, Battle makes Worlds Kronos it here with tactics. The opponent has still produce more units than the player, but not as extreme as in Battle Isle. On balance I would classify as both games but about the same weight. Who is then more easily like that can get all 10 rounds reinforcement. I have never tried this feature (except in the tutorial), so I can say little. Nice is also a feature that indicates a forecast for expected losses, if you want to attack a specific enemy unit with a particular unit. So one must not look again, how much damage a unit could make and whether the damage would be sufficient to destroy the enemy. With a small random factor you can usually very safe plan here.

3.) Playing time: The campaign will be officially given 30-40 hours of gameplay. However, this is an understatement. Hardly one of the 13 missions can be mastered in less than 5 hours many need significantly more, even if you make few or no mistakes. I appreciate my play time for all missions to approx 80-90 hours. However, you hardly notice the passing of time, as it flies by. You still want to quickly make a last train before you turn off the PC, or to see what the next opponent. The addictive as time in Battle Isle very high. Whether I'll play through a second time, I do not know. One can try to reach all the "achievements" (quasi "Mission accomplished in X rounds" trophies or Achievements for example, "lost less than Y units", "reached all the secondary goals", etc.). But particularly motivating is not. It overlooks the well quickly in the final statistics.

4) Documentation: The included manual explains the operation and not much else. The story is told through brief stoppages through transitions with small text dialogues. All other things are explained during the first mission on tutorial-like impressions, eg "Move your car there and click on it. You realize that ...". For this you get offered a help page with details just learned thing. Later in the game, almost all icons with mouse-over hints are provided, and you can allow each unit to view the properties. The manual is almost never required. This online help is unfortunately a bit sketchy, because the range of motion of all units is nowhere described. So if I want to see how far an opponent's buggy can go, then I've often wanted their own and counted the fields that this can go on comparable grounds themselves. This has been a bit annoyed. The attack range is exemplary, however, represented by an attack radius when you move the mouse over a unit. Even if you go for a planned move on the target field (without to confirm this already), you can see the next attack radius, so that you were never a unit can draw too short by mistake, if one pays attention. Some things you have to figure out the way by trial and error, such as the mine-laying works. But there are only a few of these points, most of it is well explained.

For the Commander-Editon or all Backer from a certain Pledge level there is even an extended manual and a manual unit. In this one, however, can do without, since no additional information is contained. At least here I would have liked the motion ranges, but the unit Manual is quasi only an expression of the online unit information and thus unnecessary (and, moreover, full of errors).

5.) Other: It is often praised that you can take units from mission to mission and thus benefit from their experience. This is unfortunately significantly overvalued. You get in front of some (not all!) Mission ca 5 slots for experienced units (only for the highest experience level 2) from past missions and to a points account. For these points you can choose units which have to fit on the specified slots (regarding unit type, such as air, water, heavy, medium, light units). Only the units are usually so expensive that you must always choose only 2-4 of them for its points. This one has perhaps experienced 3 units (instead of inexperienced) which only have a minor impact on the possible gameplay.

There are planned expansions, such as missions with rails and trains. For single player so even more challenges are waiting in the wings that propel the game forward.

Conclusion:
Due to the high addiction factor and game fun, I give the game patched all 5 stars. While it's not perfect, but the old Battle Isle-feeling arises, despite differences in details (which are not worse but just different than the prototype) very quickly again. These missions are highly varied. And the goal is almost never only in having to destroy all enemy units.
Those who want even more for your money, can the multiplayer mode to try to come in several variants. Boring is a while certainly not as fast.
