The species selection satisfies me as Norddeutsche, as virtually all domestic species of moths are also presented here (but where is only the beautiful nail patch?). More difficult is likely to be the situation in the southern parts of Central Europe, where especially in the low mountain ranges and the montane sections numerous other species are expected that are missing in the UK.
The text is indeed very brief, but extremely informative and is in particular the differentiation of similar species a (very encouraging: the descriptions are preferably focused on the field recognizable features - killing and dissection of animals should be avoided so!). In addition, instructions found on phenology, life cycle, larval food plants and habitat - of course, all against the backdrop of "British conditions". The final section "Status and Distribution" thus also refers to precisely this country - information on the dissemination outside the British Isles are missing altogether.
Excellent are (as always) the pictures of Richard Lewington (the 880 species are presented in 1700 figures) - one only wonders how this man takes the time, especially since he already illustrated the opulent "classics" of "Tolman" and the "Chinery" has designed! Are displayed - as in comparable book by Tolman on butterflies - but only imagines; there are in the text, although some (80) Photos interspersed by caterpillars - but these are very small and not very meaningful; Moreover, there is no information on the characteristics of the so-called. preimaginal stages as caterpillar or pupa in the text entirely. The figures show the moth in more or less its original size: thus they fall naturally are often quite small and it may be difficult to discern details in the wing drawing. Also they are presented in the natural position: this means when the owls butterflies, that the hind wings not at this stage rule - of course, an exception is made for the medal ribbons! As with Tolman's book about the butterflies you have unfortunately continued to be detained on the part of the publisher to the principle to combine all pictures in a 76seitigen "block" in the middle of the book and not to provide the pictures in addition to text! This makes a constant back-and-forth leaves needed.
For Central Europe the purchase of this book is worth (with limitation s. Above), there is hardly anything comparable on the market, ie a total representation of all moths, including the tensioner and owls. Therefore, you also do not shy away to take an English language book like this on hand to familiarize yourself with the local butterflies.
