But let us come now to the plate itself. "Siege Perilous" is it (named after the search for the Holy Grail in Arthurian) and so was the acid test for Khan. A new voice might mean also that the texts get a whole new character, even if they are written in the same style as the previous ones. So the whole thing is still to be identified as KAMELOT, the sound was not a significant change in itself. "Siege Perilous" appears less severe than its predecessor - but this is also due to the significantly gentler voice Roy Khan. Vanderbilt eventually tended the notes to slay downright. Khan on the other hand ... well, he sounds more like he was inviting them to a drink.
Compared to "Fourth Legacy", "Karma" or "Epica" this album is significantly out of line. The former needed KAMELOT no longer worry about that fans still had to get used to Khan's voice, and were thus able to make a style break in a catchier direction. Therefore, I see this album as the link between the Anfangsära with Vanderbilt and with Roy Khan.
The style of the old - the voice of the new.
Because it is now times KAMELOT because some highlights are also included already. The dismal start "Providence", the jaunty "Millenium" or the ominous "Where I Reign" - every song has its own character and its highlights. Especially much I like "Parting Visions", an up-tempo number with a beautiful chorus, and "Once A Dream," a ballad in a class. With the later works of the band all have precious little to do - sound good does it anyway, also naturally done everything to musically satisfying manner, as one would expect.
Also worth mentioning would be the instrumental closing track "Victory", which goes through storm and calm and can strike with Thomas Youngblood guitar work. The instrumentals the band I've always liked her well - pity that have come of it lately so few.
Defects shows the album in production. The sound is similar to the previous albums, very dull and comes quite underpowered therefore. However, it speaks for the quality of the band that the music sounds convincing even without outstanding production.
CONCLUSION: Who really is interested in the past of this great band, should listen again and check if he get along with their old sound. This reminds us much more of bands like Queensryche, but also less fully worked out as of the later albums. Who can make friends with the production (I personally got used to it very quickly), will have his joy in the album.
4 stars for the product, due to the outrageous 3-star review below me there but the rich 5 to compensate.
So that was the first singer Exchange - as the band the second is that time will tell. Most bands master such delicate matters as the "Siege Perilous" pursue the old style with a new singer and explore only entirely new paths in the next album. So there have indeed made NIGHTWISH. I wish the band definitely still a similarly magnificent career as before.
And if I'm honest I think the Karevik who creates! ;)
