STAR TREK is back, and with the tenth movie adventure of the crew to the Rauschiff Enterprise (now under Captain Picard) and composer Jerry Goldsmith is back on board. Its now fifth STAR TREK music was praised enormously in advance and now has to meet correspondingly high expectations. Looking through the initially exuberant praise away, it's actually easier to be impressed by the music. One expects from the soundtrack, however, immediately the "fantastic action-packed passages that rise in apocalyptic heights" and "undoubtedly most spectacular Star Trek music of all time" (press release), it is highly likely that you will be disappointed. But the fact is that Goldsmith wrote a famous score, which mixes old and new at the same time be able to offer some surprises and places both emotionally and intellectually to captivate. On musically most interesting are certainly the action passages towards the end of the CD, where Goldsmith with Strawinskyischer rhythm and aggressive instrumentation drives the action (here the music erninnert places strong one of his compositions to TOTAL RECALL). Fascinating is also how Goldsmith processed themes and motifs of earlier films in a new context, especially the mystic chords of his classic Star Trek - The Motion Picture in an action piece as "Lateral Run"! Such moments can sit up and ignore rather routinely sounding passages. Much of the CD consists of relatively simple musical suspense pieces that are of particular interest through the electronic slots only. Some quiet and melancholic moments in tracks like "My Right Arm", "ideal" and "A New Friend" ensuring moments of a comfortable level of relaxation, but not otherwise offer much new. However, all this should not obscure the fact that STAR TREK NEMESIS is actually one of the best Star Trek scores by Jerry Goldsmith. Whether he, however, the ingenuity and the epic scope of his debut exceed, may be blamed on Brussels. But of course, has a film such music once require before seriously so can be expected.
