Both lenses I have tested on my Nikon D7100.
I must add that my comparison is exclusively practical and no laboratory tests have been carried out. My review relate exclusively to practical experience with both lenses. My described here impressions and reviews in terms of these two lenses are therefore certainly partly subjective.
For imaging performance:
Scenes with the Nikkor 18-105mm were despite the use of a tripod, shutter 8, shutter speed of 160 / S 250 / S quite muddy, especially at the edges can be in my opinion the focus significantly. (Focal length 18mm). By using the other focal areas, in tabletop shooting, the results were well below average. Course, if you the price of the Nikkor 18-105mm viewed (200) obtained a decent Always plan objective for this money.
For my needs but unfortunately not enough.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR forms in all areas aperture and focal lengths, even at maximum aperture from much sharper. Even under less favorable light conditions, ensuring very sharp images. The 20mm focal length longer compared to the 18-105mm are good to get over. The 2mm at the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1 less: 3.5-5.6G ED VR me there were already important.
But that is not all advantages of the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR enumerated.
The autofocus is very accurate and the Image Stabilizer has two modes, the one normal and the other Active, with the Active Stabilizer succeed even shots that are shot on a dirt road from a moving car.
The build quality is excellent, the place of Plastiktubus in which the 16-85mm 18-105mm has a metal body. Also, the manual focusing and zoom that works at the adjusting rings of 16-85mm better and more accurate. The resistances of the adjusting rings I find very pleasant. In addition, the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR features on bayonet fitting with a sealing ring, thus the Warscheinlichkeit the dust or moisture in the body penetrates a lot less.
My Conclusion:
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR is in my opinion the best standard zoom lens that is offered at the time of Nikon DX cameras. If you want even more, you will either have to pay more or have to resort to fixed focal length lenses.
Have a picture of our Australia Shepherd (herding dog) added, faster autofocus and knackscharf.
I do not regret buying, a strong buy recommendation for photographers who want a little more.
