Logical: EXILE ... had left a big vacuum that was not to be filled with the best will in one fell swoop. And yet GHS contains sufficient permeability and (I think CONSCIOUS) callousness to let the eternal demand for a 2nd EXILE ... silenced the same the following year (even if the time has not quite worked so).
There are but a few really pretty songs on the disc. And I mean not as "Angie", the most in any case only surface Stones fans call (apart from the sales of the single times) as a "super hit".
And what pray tell so bad to "Dancing With Mister D", the casual playful opening track, or what about "Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", which will open with a heartwarming guitar part reminiscent of early computer game melodies?
Or: "100 Years Ago" - actually a catchy tune for Always Goodbye. Or: "Hide Your Love" and "Winter", which, if they had appeared on EXILE ..., nowadays probably possess even a cult.
Or: the scandal song "Star Star", which was actually titled "Starf *****"? A dirty Stones rocker at its finest!
For example, since the addition of the current vielgelobtge EXILE deluxe version has failed a lot weaker, I think!
It may be that Keith was exhausted and tired and not really in the matter. (How many interpretations of the album cover back, where he among other things, as [quote] "a burnt matchstick" effect, are there not already been made ...). But there were still the two Mick (Jagger and Taylor), Charlie, Bill, Bobby Keys and Billy Preston!
Musically you can the Stones on GHS - so I think - at least not blame.
Yes, it's not over Drüber Killer album. But after 4 so strong predecessors, this movement was probably high time to durchzuschnaufen once. (Or, as has accordingly formulated as beautiful another reviewer: "They came back the music back to Earth ...").
At the same time I think GHS least for a par with his successor IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL or even the often little too hyped Some Girls (1978).
My recommendation anyway: If you do not yet have all the studio albums should the Rolling Stones, it is wiser to zuzulegen eg GHS before accesses one of many more unnecessary Hit-Collections!
Conclusion: GHS is casual and there is not just from "Angie" I - as already mentioned - by no means outstanding find (even too much wind is often made to individual songs on the discs!). It affects a total of a bit like a deliberate small Verschaufpause that invites as an overall concept for multiple listening and humming along! GHS is closer to EXILE ... as otherwise any Stones album (apart from Sticky Fingers perhaps).
My review therefore: 3-4 star, and I - to clarify my positive stance on the album - here tend towards more positive review!
For fans anyway a must! For people with incomplete Stones collections probably a worthwhile investment. Have a listen!
