As usual with Chattam, there is something very Manichean in the exhibition of the struggle of good against evil.
But history is rather involved, on the border between Stephen King (a return wave "it" or even "Storm of the Century" ...) and Dan Simmons in his book "Dogs of Winter "assured murky atmosphere, always with a few bloody and violent details like Chattam like at the dissemination sometimes.
The rhythm that made the success of Chattam is already there: the chapters are linked together and you always want to continue the adventure, to plunge deeper into the knowledge of history to understand, to know, to see. .. and the main characters are rather endearing.
Note, however, that compared to his later books, originality reign of the Fifth probably lies in his fantastic character. And personally, I think it suits him rather well Chattam. It is a genre in which one also feels comfortable in those he has developed in his other works.
In short, without reaching the summits, it is a story to give you chills in the back, to read under the blanket, warm, in the half darkness of his room ...
