Customer Review

The Beginning of the End of the SLR era

The NEX 6 is a reasonably affordable, robust and chic unwitnessed camera.

Image Quality:
The NEX 6 has an excellent image quality in RAW and JPG mode and has a great low-light performance. None of my APS C cameras is so good. (Possess or possessed: SLT 65V, SLT 33, Nex 5, Alpha 700, Alpha 350). The images are to ISO 3200 really still usable. Drüber addition noise is visible on the screen, then you have to help out or you have to accept it. The latter is easy, since the noise is merely a very fine luminance noise and thus not as much bother as the color noise. Color noise leaves namely normally ugly spots in the image. At high ISO> = 6400, it nevertheless pays to shoot images in RAW mode and then rework RAW Converter. This provides better results than the JPEG engine of the camera.
When printing on inkjet falls Smoking rest on considerably less.
The resolution is sufficient with 16 MP all because already 5 MP are for an image at normal viewing distance (around twice the diagonal) enough. Sharper not see selbts good eyes. Thus, there is still reserve to crop the image.
Image Quality Camera: 5 stars

Features:
Apart from a touch screen, the camera has all included on board. Flash and viewfinder. Unlike the rest of body, in which one has the feeling of being able to strike nails lightning makes a somewhat filigree impression when it is expanded. The features I would like to highlight the Peaking function and Fokusierlupe, facilitate manual focusing significantly. I use the camera with the adapter LAE1 at Alpha SLR lenses and needs focusing manually there. Otherwise it has all the Sony-typical functions such as Panorama, HDR (multiple images of different exposure combine to cover higher contrast ratio), (reduce multiple images the same exposure to noise, works very well) multi-frame and various scene modes.

As a hotshoe the new ISO Sony combo shoe is now mounted, can be connected to the normal ISO accessories. Then other camera functions are transmitted via an additional Kontakleiste. For this purpose, if necessary. Adapters are required. This strategy change I find personal shame: With the old Minolta hotshoe Disconnecting and reconnecting the flash went ratz Fatz. Top Insert and pull. Especially with the small cameras that would be really elegant. When ISO shoe I have always fiddle with the locking screw. Particularly annoying and actually a Unveschämtheit it is Sony that no adapter for the previous lightning accompanied, especially since these are sold regularly. The adapter costs then again 28, -.

Addendum: In the meantime I received about the Sony store and the flash adapter ADP-MAA. This can actually be put on all my old flashes and use with full functionality. You can then decide whether the adapter stays on the camera and flash alone or the complete unit is removed. Provided that the flash can be used as the master, so that other flashes can be controlled remotely. A choice of the transmission channel is not, there will always be set to channel 1. Whether the fine contacts of the adapter are suitable for everyday photographers, let's see. Here can be on the small internal flash no remote control to perform. This goes well with the equipped with lightning SLRs.

The viewfinder displays all the information and, as regards image quality and resolution, excellent. The insight is not quite as comfortable as in my SLT 65. In a direct comparison, the screen looks a little smaller and is a little further back in the chassis. It is nevertheless to use super. Excellent is also the screen. Very bright image. It is amazing that you can see at extreme oblique sight him. With an outstretched arm over your head, you can easily identify the picture even without lowering the screen. This compensated a little that the screen only up and down but can not be folded sideways. No time for self-portraits, for example, will not do.

The Autofukus is probably amazing thanks to a combined focus (phase and contrast AF) is fast and my SLT 65 for if at all only imperceptibly.
Facilities: just 5 star because of the lack adapter. (The thing with the hot shoe one can also just look different)

Operation and control elements:
About two dials, a mode-control dial, a function button and a 4-way rocker, the camera can actually operate excellently. The 4 positions of the 4-way rocker accommodate as compact cameras usual sequence, Belichtunsgkorrektur, ISO and display setting. Further 6 selectable / programmable functions on the screen / viewfinder can be accessed via the function button, with the 4-way rocker, the function is selected, then adjust the parameter with one of the two rotary wheels. The lower soft key can be programmed. Thus, there are 12 functions that can be broadly defined individually, more or less in Dirketzugriff available, that should be enough. The lower rotary knob is mE but a bit too smoothly. So far so good, the camera can be so wonderful like a compact use. The change is therefore likely to be relatively easy, probably what Sony wanted to.

For (former) SLR users still air remains for improvements via firmware update: The two rotary wheels are not used consistently. Except in manual mode (a dial aperture a time) the rotary wheels have the same function or even one remains without function. Example P-Mode: The upper rotary control leads through the program shift, the lower is without function. It would be nice if you could selectively assign any function such as exposure compensation.

Also I would have wished that the 4-way rocker and the softkeys must be assigned the same as in the NEX 5. There you can call up further functions by pressing the middle soft key on the external positions of the 4-way rocker. This is not necessary because the same goes beyond the function button, but when you work with two cameras simultaneously, it would be nice if the operator also runs the same.

Finally, finally Sony has realized it not only the most expensive model can now create an exposure range of more than 0.7 EV. This usual castration of cheaper cameras Sony has omitted here. Otherwise the camera would have been also sent back by return mail. You can now set up plus-minus 3 f. I wish here like firmware updates, for example, for my SLT 65th

The speed of the camera is fast. Ten pictures in one second (but only with the focus and exposure on the first picture) are already en word. Otherwise, it's off a bit slower, but still fast. This blazing speed is particularly important for the HDR and multi-frame noise reduction advantage. Since the buffer memory but only about 10 images (RAW, JPEG more) stores, it would be nice if you could also reduce the speed, so long scenes can be photographed. That would also be possible via firmware update

Operation: almost 5 star, because the operating concept is almost complete and good, but still not really seem mature (at least for SLR users). However, the criticisms put whining is at a high level. Former users of compact cameras you would probably not even notice.

The lens 16-50
It is compact and has extremely good optical performance, at least in terms of sharpness. In RAW mode, ie without electronic tutoring it provides better sharpness than my Zeiss 16-80 on the SLT 65 and in this respect is by far the best normal range zoom lens that I've ever had. Unfortunately at 16mm a legally violent, spontaneous vignetting in the corners on (about the size of the old-fashioned photo corners). Since you have to correct or to prune the image on 16.9, then falls off the vignetting. Distortion unfortunately I could not vote, but the first images show rather inconspicuous behavior. However, as you can very well correct subsequently di latter two points, they have for me not the meaning.
Despite elekromotorischer zoom adjustment you have the zoom ring feels good. Per switch itself also leaves a silent zoom constant speed start, for video that is quite good. Unfortunately, the speed let's not settle, so I then possibly. But has to rely on the zoom ring again if I want to zoom faster or slower in the video.
Lens: 3 stars because of vignetting.

Conclusion: Twice almost 5 star and 5 star once are 5 star for the camera. The Objetiv, well, I can live with the vignetting, others will probably quickly forget. As for the camera: Sony is well known for listening to its customers and subsequently make improvements. I'm curious times on the firmware updates.
