It took me some time to discover and enjoy the quintet of Bruckner, which is nevertheless a remarkable work. Mature work (1879), contemporary symphonies No. 5 and 6, including the Adagio is memorable. I listened to several versions of this work (that of Melos Quartett, that of the Fine Arts Quartet, in particular): this really is a cut above. Is it because members of Brandis Quartett and Brett Dean are all from the Berlin Philharmonic and all played the symphonies of Bruckner under the direction of inspired leaders? Maybe. Probably. Still, their understanding of the work is unequaled. They take their time and to come to an impressive depth. Their adagio particular, is especially poignant. Very nice complement with op. 111 Brahms. A major disk.
