The admiration I have for the exceptional musician was Igor Markevitch (I attended one of his last concerts, alas, interrupted by the disease), in the complete symphonies of Tchaikovsky striking confirmation.
All the charm of the melodies of the composer, so often stifled by redundancy, disfigured by a shameless sentimentality here is made with a source of water purity, without neglecting the depth of power, nor to miss the mystery.
Clear lines, taut rhythms, steering Markevitch is worthy of a surveyor. Is immaculate! Without rigorous severity or drought, it is of immediate evidence, and appears indisputable copy.
So who cares that this edition 4 CD (the only available way, if I am not mistaken) forces us to change the disc to hear the third and fourth movement symphonies 2 and 5 - after all there was a time, where they were to return the 33 laps to hear the rest, and they did not complain ...- especially since the sound quality is excellent.
I will not risk the cliché: "Tchaikovsky as you've never heard!" But surely "Tchaikovsky as you will not hear it often!"
