Before reading this book, I'd never looked at total absence of women in literature before the seventeenth century, I do not speak heroines exist in the imagination of authors but women author. Women were at best at the show and maintained correspondences.
As demonstrated by Virginia Woolf, the great writers of the nineteenth were academics of good family, money and higher education is crucial to their artistic creativity, allowing them to concentrate on writing.
As long as women do not have a room to oneself money and space for écrire- they can not compete with the men, but at the beginning of the twentieth, things are changing and women will start to have their place in the litterature.
A great book about women's emancipation in the early twentieth century, efficient and beautiful writing, as a man, this reading really touched me.
