Octavarium (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Dream Theater can themselves with their 7th studio album ("A Change of Seasons" not counted) still surprise you!
Since entering from Jordan Rudess, the band seems to be able to write any bad songs more. Goods on older albums here and there to record a few failures, there is the band since "Scenes From A Memory" on a creative flight of fancy.
Only "Six degress of Inner Turbulence" sounded a little unbalanced. But you have to say that in a review of a DT-output you can just take the tape itself as a yardstick ever since DT float as "superiority" over the prog rock scene and are comparable with any other band.
After "Train Of Thought", which was a revelation for me, and in terms of hardness is probably the most uncompromising work of the band's history, I wondered, in fact, as DT will still beat ...
As already mentioned, DT have embarked on "Octavarium" a new way. The changes are not serious, but finely dosed and placed in the right places.
"Octavarium" is generally a little quieter than its predecessor, but when it comes down to business, then just as bold as to "train of thought"!
DT dare on the new album which. The songs are all very orchestral sound and partly almost to a musical.
With "The answer lies within" have DT again a ballad at the start, which is so straightforward that the men have selbiger determined little bored when playing ... ;-)
But why must the prog rock gods always write complicated songs? That they move play technically at the highest level, DT point to the rest of the plate well enough. In this respect, a "simple" song a very welcome change.
"I Walk Beside You" could easily get into the charts. This song could have been equally represented at "Falling Into Infinity".
However, the absolute Oberhammer is the title track "Octavarium". A song length of 24 minutes and promises Some listeners will not be disappointed. At first you hear obvious Pink Floyd and even later, Queen of bonds out! The whole thing sounds but never placed or misplaced. Self quotations from earlier DT-works are spread throughout the album.
For me DT exceeded with "Octavarium" all my expectations. The album sounds as a unified whole and is despite a total running time 75 minutes, unfortunately, too soon.
This band has not done yet! :-)
