BPRD: Being Human (Paperback)

Customer Review

This volume is a collection of short stories published between 2008 and 2011.

BPRD "The Dead Remembered" (2011, screenplay by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, Karl Moline drawings and inking Andy Owens, 66 pages) - In 1693, a group of Puritans coolly shade a woman accused of witchcraft. In 1976, a priest called Trevor Bruttenholm to the rescue to help him practice an exorcism in a house haunted. Hellboy advises Liz Sherman Bruttenholm to take with him. She is a teenager and she needs to get out of the BPRD HQ where it remains locked for fear of what can cause his powers.

This miniseries is the opportunity to meet Liz Sherman in his first speech to the BPRD, finally with Bruttenholm. Mignola offers hunting residue witch, haunted house and a shared teenage heroin between the desire to be normal and to rebel against the established authority, but also the burden of his powers. Bruttenholm oscillates between caring father and adult dumped by the girl. Without exciting the story goes for complex and ambiguous relationship between these two characters.

The story is illustrated by Karl Moline who had worked with Joss Whedon to (Fray). The drawings are somewhat rounded, which gives them a childish side, sometimes at odds with the darkness of the monster, but in line with the changing character of Liz. 4 stars.

BPRD "Casualties" (screenplay by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, drawings Guy Davis, 8 pages) - During a routine check in an isolated cottage in 1981, the agent who accompanies Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien is injured in their eyes by a supernatural creature.

This is a short story that allows Mike Mignola illustrate the distance between Liz and Abe. Guy Davis is impressive in its ability to spend big ugly monster, complex expressions of the characters. This is a short scene that manages to exist Liz and Abe as individuals that the reader knows well and he readily understood the friendship between them, but also the existential distance between them. 5 Stars.

Hellboy "Being human" (2011, screenplay by Mike Mignola, Richard Corben illustrations, 28 pages) - the BPRD has just incorporate Roger the Homunculus into its ranks. Confidence does not reign. Hellboy takes him to a mission that seems easy to test his capabilities and trustworthiness.

Beautiful! Another impressive success of Mike Mignola associated with Richard Corben. This made me very happy to be able to find Roger time to an episode. Again Mignola knows perfectly emotionally involve the reader in the situation. It provides Corben a scenario occurring in a cemetery with an old black mama and skeletal ghosts. Corben immersed in what he knows best illustrate and proposes a monolithic version of Roger, a true stony texture. 5 stars

BPRD "The ectoplasmic man" (2008, screenplay by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi illustration Ben Stenbeck) - The faithful readers of the BPRD series know that Johann Kraus found himself décorporé during a séance that went wrong . Mignola and Arcudi back on this event to tell in detail how Kraus went from medium status to that of the BPRD disembodied spirit of service.

With this story, the reader can get a better idea of who was Johann Kraus before it passes the state of ectoplasm. In particular, Mignola and Arcudi detail what motivates Kraus. This facet of the story will not interest readers passing by against it brings a fascinating complement to that character, ultimately very mysterious in the BPRD. The drawings of Ben Stenbeck have a level of detail that reminds Duncan Fegredo on the set of Hellboy, with a good command of the atmosphere associated with old mansions. 5 stars (provided they are a regular reader of stories BPRPD).

While the previous collection of short stories of the BPRD (BPRD 12) had disappointed me, it enchanted me, for what he brings to the recurring characters of the series. This is a volume to recommend to regular readers of the BPRD series because it is based on knowledge of Liz Sherman, Trevor Bruttenholm, Roger and Johann Kraus.
