Great folk album

Plainspoken (Audio CD)

Customer Review

According to the latest John Mellencamp albums I was already somewhat disappointed as it was said that the new album would plainspoken again Roots-folk album, JM had last but announced that they finally want to again record a rock album. Now that I hear the album since Friday quasi in heavy rotation, I must say that I am extremely surprised and pleased to note that plainspoken the best JM album since Whenever We Wanted and most importantly by far the best of the recent folk has become -albums. Again very rootsig and earthy dry produced by T-Bone Burnett-one can hear through the 10 songs and the long minutes with 43:45 Album wonderfully in one go. There is no single skip song and long gone Mellencamp has such beautiful melodies composed as on plainspoken. Only the voice of Mellencamp is already badly affected. I wonder how many cigarettes you smoke per day needs to get such a smoky voice. Then again, that voice fits this kind of music perfectly.

It starts with the very beautiful Troubled Man. The acoustic guitars from the firm's companions Mike Wanchic and Andy York lead the song a beautifully before the drums of Dane Clark added, later the violin of Miriam Sturm. It developed the first highlight of the album.

Sometimes There's God has an irresistible chorus, the lyrics are a bit simple: "Sometimes There is God, sometimes there's just not." Well, still a very nice song.

The next highlight comes with The isolation of Mister that reminds just at the beginning of the great A Ride Back Home from the album Life, Death, Love and Freedom. Lyrically, you might think, JM describes it himself, because he is not supposed to be just a person with whom it can withstand long. Great song!

Very folky comes The Company of Cowards therefore, reminds almost a bit like Jackie Brown, great!

Various fan forums According Tears should be perhaps the best song on plainspoken in Vain. In fact, it is the next very beautiful song, in which my ears for the first time is an electric guitar used. Would also fit well on Big Daddy and reminded of the somewhat melancholy mood here yet most of the recent folk albums.

With The Brass Ring comes my personal favorite song. A mid-tempo song, as he could not be more beautiful, with a nice text, which tells a self-contained story and almost nostalgic comes, as it did Cherrybomb or Theo and Weird Henry. So I wish the folky John Mellencamp! Great, fantastic song!

Freedom of Speach too, which is introduced by the violin joins seamlessly into this album. Somewhat reminiscent To Washington. Acoustically held Folksong, consists almost entirely of acoustic guitar and violin and turn a beautiful melody.

Blue Charlotte has to look away, look away ... again as an irresistible chorus that no longer wants to go out of your ear.

Shortly before the end: The Courtesy of Kings, a song by Bob Dylan from his masterpiece Blood on the Tracks could be smooth. Madness song!

The bluesy Lawless Times ends plainspoken. Musically, this song falls slightly from the otherwise quite folky under the album without falling in terms of quality. The voice of JM sounds still rougher and dirtier than on the rest of her album. Also reminiscent of Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited album. Great end to a great album.

For me, another candidate for best album of the year, I do not (longer) would begin to have expected John Mellencamp. Do me the last folk albums convinced only partially because they were therefore partially depressed and melancholy, plainspoken is a continuous pleasure. This album in the luggage I would even yet again very happy Watch me a concert, although I was a bit disappointed after the last concert of his in 2011. Could there even renounce his old hits from the 80s.

Was the cover photo comes still from Meg Ryan, with Mellencamp yes romantically involved for several years: Small "trashy" side note. Most recently, the two have separated. ;-)
