After I have learned even the basics of photography many years ago to make a (albeit simpler) SLR with various additional lenses and filters ordinary images, followed by the time of Videofilmens (children). As these were large, I decided then to switch to compact camera, rather than again having to carry around a bunch of equipment. After the Ixus 55, who has done a very good service over the years, but is now getting on in years, it was time for the next technology leap. He's with the Ixus 230 obviously well managed! At first I was skeptical about what may be able to afford an 8x zoom in compact size well. While the images of visible 55er came to the limits already in utilization of the 3x optical zoom, the usable without any visible loss of quality range of 230 mm is for the size of the device really great and better than I had hoped for it! Although I can not compare directly with other manufacturers the camera, I am convinced that we have made with the Canon again a good choice. It's worth it in any case, to study the advanced manual. Previously you had to understand the photograph, the operation of the camera was then quite clear. Knowing the basics of photography, is still a must (eg also the most expensive camera is not properly expose a portrait in full backlight). If you still 'sees' what the camera when the programs do, then you can make with 'small' surprisingly good images, especially at this price!
Even so, just for completeness, I have the silver version, made in Japan, and this definitely has a metal case and has a high quality finish. I also ordered directly to a screen protector, which I think for all devices with displays of this size is indispensable.
