,
If you look in Rantala striking round face, one encounters mostly this outrageous wide, slanted grin. And then there's this impish mischief in his eyes. Something is a little reminiscent of a troll, this mythical creature that has a sly old dog. Or rather in the fingertips ...

To a certain extent by this obvious temperament is always found in his piano playing again - The Joyous, Humorous, funny Trollish in Serious, thoughtful, elegiac, romantic, heartfelt always Radicals. Cool, colorless metal smoothness, pure minimalism, no, these properties analogous to Cover image with Joel Shapiro sculpture to the Finnish keyboard virtuosos can not really attribute. It is in the case, probably a lot more of similar expression of dynamic, some unexpectedly agile mobility, the inherent cited sculpture. Who already knows Rantala mainly energy sparkling, irreverent imaginative, before any music genre halt-making but also very sensitive plants, especially the famous creations that he has with his longtime, jazz classic instrumentalised, but rather less so used Trio previously presented Töykeät who knows whereof I speak (Töykeät svw "unfriendly, harshly," after approx. 20 years of existence dissolved in 2008). That he did it all - I would argue brazenly, without contradiction - can afford it owes its sophisticated, in particular often quickly played Hot Stuff wonderfully light-looking, excellent technique and a good dose of sense of style and brilliant elegance.

Also on this in his long career, amazingly, the first solo album is rather less feeling of pure, cool jazz in the strictest sense. His current solo dedicated Rantala for some T. in reflection of characteristics - mostly died much too early - masterly experts in their field, to their person or music, he has a more or less special personal relationship, in the track sequence.:
Pekka Pohjola (1952-2008),
Bill Evans (1929-1980)
Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987),
Esbjörn Svensson (1964-2008),
Erroll Garner (1921-1977),
Mr. and Mrs. Jean (1865-1957) and Aino (1871-1969) Sibelius,
Art Tatum (1909-1956),
Michel Petrucciani (1962-1999),
Oscar Peterson (1925-2007)
Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007).
Who wants to know about the choices backgrounds in detail more, which were published by the label comments Rantala recommended (only in English) as well as product information (... possibly it might sometimes be a real download booklet?).

Of the ten titles are track 7 and 9 Cover versions of popular jazz pieces by Charlie Parker and Toots Thielemans. With Track 10, he brings a touch of classical Pietro Mascagni.

. Of the remaining originals eg Track 1 already existed previously in other, no less beautiful form: on YouTube there is of it a live clip Rantala former New Trio (piano, guitar, human beatbox; only album: Elmo from 2008, mentioned title there is not included).

Track 8 is the continuation Rantala musical tribute to the exemplary highly revered Petrucciani, included on the published 2000 trio album Kudos. For Kudos, incidentally noted that it is conceptually likewise a personal tribute, with the names of the givers for. T. hidden in the titles will find and the trio then even allowed the oblique joke, this is to be itself (ge ) think. So I can understand that now specially emphasized for the solo album from the label first and uniqueness of a tribute Rantala not quite, although the two albums are decorated in character fundamentally different. In Kudos almost everything is very funny, twisted humoresquely and sparkling.

The bottom line, however, Rantala now presents a wonderful melody flowing, coated with a slight melancholy album, which in some serene paintings much seriousness, depth and sensitivity provides for a wide audience. And when he gently it with the edited Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana closes as dreamily, I wish that it would go a little further to this "interlude" ...

Note:
Currently Rantala is also working with Pekka Kuusisto, as a duo, they released 2009 CD "Subterraneo".
Kuusisto (b. 1976, younger brother of Jaakko Kuusisto) is one of Finland "young guns". An excellent classical violinist, he has already taken a variety of symphonic works, among others, Vivaldi, Prokofiev, Paganini, Bach, and of course the Finnish national composer Sibelius. In addition, he plays jazz, folk, electronic music, loves improvisation and has z. B. with Nightwish (Metal) collaborated.
