Moto X Smartphone (11.9 cm (4.7 inches) AMOLED touchscreen, 10 megapixel camera, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, nano-SIM slot, Android 4.4) Black (Wireless Phone)

Customer Review

I bought the Moto X as a replacement for my previously used Sony Xperia Z1. As a comparative way, I had the
last 6 months several mobile phones, which I would compare to different places with my new Moto X .. Specifically, I had the following in the last 6 months models: Apple iPhone 5, Apple iPhone 5s, Google Nexus 5, Sony Xperia Z1 ..

I would argue the Moto X combines the most positive of these smartphones in a single device:

- The size and weight of 130 grams is very pleasant and the device is a real flatterer, minimally wider than an iPhone 5 (s) but only minimally higher and thicker, by the rounded back, it is very well operated with one hand, the forefinger rests with me in the depression with the Motorola logo under the camera, which provides extra support. The back is not hard plastic, but feels noble gummed on, even better feeling than a Nexus. 5

- The display takes almost all the space of the housing, the margins are very narrow, through the AMOLED requires very good black level, the end of the display is not visible against dark backgrounds, it runs with the housing to form a unit, which looks noble. Personally, I bought the black model - the white model you see quite clearly the "window" for the proximity sensor, camera and microphone, which fails the black model. The quality of the display is top notch, although had previously only Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Lumia 820 and 920 with AMOLED for comparison, but this display is great. The viewing angle is very good, the black level as described great and the colors are very crisp but not so oversubscribed such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 / S4. The brightness level is good, but not as blindingly bright such as when an Xperia Z1, but this was never used anyway. How does the whole proposes in sunshine, remains to be seen .. sun just does not seem as much :-(

- The commissioning and data transfer from the old smartphone runs beautifully simple and fast. The app "Motorola Migrate" starts automatically, to install the app on his old phone well, then appear on the Motorola a QR code, which you shoot with the old phone. Then, the two devices connect and all data are transferred to the new device. So you can then, for example, also from Motorola again transferred to another device. Very good!

The setup of the voice control is started during the initial start-up, you can also stop and set up later in the settings via the "Voice control". The device works like this: You get a short introduction by video and demo, then you have to keep the phone at a short distance in front of him and say when prompted "OK Google Now". If this is done correctly 3 times, the voice pattern is recognized and you can give the phone in this way commands or ask questions. I did this extensively tested with questions "how many degrees it has in ..." How far is it to after .... "What is the current traffic situation on the route to ..." "Put the alarm clock on .. . "Everything is going wonderfully by voice command. If you have misplaced his phone times, you just shouting "OK Google Now" and the Moto X with a divided thus where it is. The commands to be adopted by voting pattern recognition only by the person defined in the setup. 3 other people have tried it with my device, it has not reacted, with me immediately. Perfect!

During commissioning, it is then pointed out also by Notification that you get 50GB of Google Drive storage for 2 years free. This memory can be associated with one click of his Google account.

As a further step, you can still set up remote wipe, site monitoring, etc .., which you can then boot from the Motorola web site. The function is similar comfortable as "iPhone Search" via iCloud ..

- Performance: The Moto X is weak on paper, therefore, when compared with the swanky Quad or Octacores .. Fact: It has 2 Krait cores (Qualcomm) are which clocked with 1.7 GHz, plus 2 single cores on the same Dice, which is similar to Apple (M7) for movement, air pressure evaluations, etc. and an additional charge of speech recognition in standby. Integrated in the chip is the Adreno 320 graphics chip with 4 cores. It is thus a Snapdragon S4 Pro Custom, which is marketed by Motorola as X8 Application Processor.

The "Schwuppdizität", ie the response and the everyday performance is very good, the equipment never increased, everything loads quickly. I now feel no delay compared to units which Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 have as an "engine". The software is well adapted and Android 4.4.2 that is installed, help for its optimized and reduced hardware requirements even further. So therefore I am very satisfied.

- Equipment and quality of features:

First: The built-in speakers, which gives back the sound is compared to many competitors models loud and sounds very clear, even at high volumes, the quality is better than the iPhone 5s, which had been my reference.

The voice quality is very good in normal conversations, for me the best thing I have ever experienced in speakerphone mode due to the good speakers and the 3 microphones. Additionally, I have it linked to my Fritz box 7390 by Fon app to HD to test telephony .. A delight! Motorola phones have always been good phones and it even today, even though this may be for some, only a "secondary function" ...

The LED lamp, which is acting as a photo light or flash in the mode "flashlight" very bright, no comparison to barely visible LED in the Sony Xperia Z1. So a clear plus.

The camera app starts quickly, even if the phone shakes times. The trigger is fast. The light sensitivity is good, but in artificial light, the picture moves rather in the Warmtonbereich. Here the iPhone 5s and the Sony Xperia Z1 are slightly better, but the photo quality is clearly closer to that of an iPhone 5, or exceeds these depending on lighting conditions. The built-Sensor is a OV10820 manufacturer Omnivision. The sensor has the BSI2 baptized technology and a 1.4-micron pixel size which is greater than that of the iPhone 5s or a Galaxy S4. Larger pixels = more light per pixel ... The camera also has a RGBC color filter, which lets through more light and thus to bring less noise in low light conditions. In (10.5-megapixel) full resolution 30 frames per second (fps) to be added. The sensor supports 4K2K (3840 x 2160 pixels) at 30 fps and 1080p FHD video at 60 fps. These slow-mo video at 30fps or 60 fps are recorded (depending on resolution). Likewise Burst Shoots, so continuous shooting. Panorama function and HDR are now probably standard ..

The device responds by information on the proximity sensor when pulling it out of his pocket and lifts off the table when it is on display. It then displays information about messages (SMS, Whatsapp, calls ...) as icons on the screen, without which one press any button or unlock the AMOLED display muss.Da because no light is switched on, since the pixel light up by itself and the background remains black, the power consumption is low. One can define for this function also times when this does not take place (sleep)

Using the "Motorola Assist" you can still define functional profiles. "Motoring", "meeting" and "sleep" are possible here. Here you can define what should happen when in the mode (similar to the good old profiles from earlier, only intelligent ..)

GPS has recognized the location even indoors immediately - was very surprised because the Xperia Z1 my first device was which determined the proper location via GPS as fast.

Accessories:

An Ordinary USB charger with 2 USB ports is, so you can incidentally also mitladen something else. The charger is very high quality, as well as the USB cable. Both are white, regardless of whether you buy a white or black device. Other accessories do not exist apart from a needle, which has a plastic end with Motorola logo. This needle is used to eject the Sim Tray. Here is the same size as the iPhone 5 Sim (s) is required, so the Nano Sim. Please note this!

Battery life:

To date (after 24 hours), the battery was of the original charge (was with me at 98%) still be charged about 40%, which I've installed everything synchronized and played a lot with it and experimenting. On Sony Xperia Z1 battery would have been there already empty .. So therefore I expect good!

The repairability is lt. IFixit good (7/10 stars) As I repair many phones, this is a definite plus. The back can be a little hot air and by means of a plastic lever easily removed .. google for "iFixit teardown Moto X" ..

I'll be the next days, weeks and months testing the device thoroughly and inform you as soon as something really stand what I like or even less ...

Update of 16 March 2014:

I use the Moto X a day, doing well professionally photos with it. It is always there. The grippy rear survives the previously no signs of wear and scratches. The smartphone itself I rate still as in the original review indicated, however, I have already experienced better cameras in smartphones. The quality is very good at Moto X, if you are not shakes or moves. Interior photos are sometimes great, sometimes a bit yellowish. The exposure time is sometimes too long gewählt..sieht then look blurry. Here an Xperia Z1 outside, Nokia 925 in the dark, 1020 everywhere (except tripping time) or iPhone 5S in the quickness things better ..

What the others are not better: stability! The Moto X is running compared to what I know from the Android range ultra stable! It fell far indeed from apps, but since I put on ART since the beginning ... The system had been no real loss! It's weeks since I've started my new Moto.
