The book contains a lot of valuable advice for songwriters who already have some experience and want to know beyond alternative ways to write more original melodies and chord progressions. Jimmy Webb describes in detail the different elements of a song and advocates, not uniform the verse-chorus pattern to follow, but for example also to use AABA structures or sometimes to compose a ballad AAA, if that's appropriate for the content. His remarks on chord substitution, or prologues to the development of ideas I found enlightening or at least stimulating.
However, the book is lengthy but (at least for my taste). Many anecdotes, much controversy (Jimmy Webb is an example ardent advocate of pure Reims) and also a lot of bitterness there with swings. If you want to gain a foothold in the US and for example, want to write songs on Broadway, then one finds in Webb's book numerous references tips.
