Regrettably, it must be said that this pioneering did not succeed completely, even though the conditions were apparently optimal: Janowski, Staatskapelle Dresden and a squad known singers (Norman, Gedda, Hunter, Bird).
Musically, the recording is well done. In Janowski conducting me indeed missing from time to time a bit of fire and temperament, for he works the lyrical passages nice out. The orchestra provides the same high quality, the choirs are excellent and the sound just fine.
So far so good. Unfortunately, the singer lag behind these claims. If you have heard once the Leitner-recording with his outstanding quintet (Trude Eipperle as Euryanthe, Wolfgang wind lanes as Gerard / Adolar, Maria Kinas as Claudia / Eglantine, Gustav Neidlinger as Count Lysiart and Wilhelm Schirp as king), then appears a the here up botene ensemble but quite pale. Neither Jessye Norman, even Nicolai Gedda, Rita Hunter and Tom Krause know particularly convincing. The only bright spots there are in the supporting roles of the King (Siegfried Vogel) and Bertha (Renate Krahmer).
Can I recommend this recording? Conditionally. Who wants to hear great singers, who will probably not be satisfied with this recording. In this regard, my recommendation clearly towards Leitner recording of 1954. The RECORDING is historical, edited and shortened, however, have vocally unique and affordable at the label Valhalla.
Who more than the music of the song is important or who partout may not hear historical recordings, which finds an appealing interpretation here.
Little tip: Who wants a both hear the sound technical and the artistic excellent Euryanthe overture, which should listen to the times Weber sampler of Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic (German Grammophon). Unfortunately, the factory only the overture!
Final evaluation of Janowksi-Euryanthe: conducting / orchestra 4 stars, 2 stars singer makes total an average of 3!
