But the only way ...
Here it's all about the continuation of the sampler Rogue's Gallery in 2006. This is now available also and is named Son of Rogue's Gallery. Who now believes that only warmed leftovers are served, which is hereby stated that the new double CD but differs considerably from its predecessor.
But where does one begin?
At first the star density on this album is higher. While names like Bono, Sting, Van Dyke Parks and Bryan Ferry are this time no longer to be found, but these are Shane MacGowan, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Michael Stipe, Marianne Faithful, Marc Almond, Sean Lennon, Dr. John and Broken Social Scene represented. And that's more than just an adequate substitute and only tip of the iceberg, you can not enumerate here all the names. Johnny Depp's fellow actors Tim Robbins and Anjelica Huston are this time.
Thematically, keep to the less dense then the subtitle with Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys. The song selection is extended to a few original compositions (such as Chuck E. Weiss). The Pirate Jenny from the 3 Penny Opera happens here, Petra Haden sings George Harrison's Sunshine Life For Me (can also be found on Ringo Starr's '73 solo album) and a certain Ed Pastorini singing a capella the Don Van Vliet composition Orange Claw Hammer. The wet element in the broader sense is still the issue, but the very traditional, Irish colored shanties and shanties of the first edition are in the minority. Who this particularly liked the first part, I recommend definitely intense pre-listening.
Thus, the musical contributions are sometimes a bit more modern and less dark and menacing than on its predecessor. Another new feature is that between the current images of old sea shanties time also a historical recording can be found. This is due to the friendship between Hal Willner and Gail Zappa, who has asked the instrumental recording Wedding Dress Song / Handsome Cabin Boy by Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention of the Year 1967/68 available for this album.
Also, the booklet is slightly narrower than its predecessor. Hal Willner explains very clearly the genesis of this new edition, and reports of the meetings during the recordings and sometimes even from the experiences that he had during the live performances of Rogue's Gallery, which had taken place previously.
Overall, again a very interesting and well-produced project. However, with less pathos here and there and a little less dirt here and there, but a lot of Kurzweil and some surprises .. I'm still swaying a little with the final evaluation, because actually you can, the very high level of its predecessor this time not maintained on both CDs , In particular, the second CD contains some getting used to but contributions which tend partially into Experimental.
I still give it 5 stars, but also say they shine a little paler than in part. 1
