Battle Born (CD)

Customer Review

The Killers return after a break some would say more or less according to their saving expectations. One thing is sure, our dear killers confirm their trend already well underway on the previous "Day and Age", to move away from energetic rock beginnings to approach greatly from a much pop music. Certainly, there has always been this kind of false lightness disillusioned and very 80's keyboards in the band's music, but there still ... lovers of good guitars and rock (you remember "When You Were Young" ?) will not necessarily be at the party.

But I like it, this "Battle Born". It's catchy, well-composed, well-produced, full of catchy melodies ... it goes alone. Not the slap we were entitled to expect of such a group, but a good album nonetheless. What is surprising is that it is much more a continuation of the solo album of singer Brandon Flowers, "Flamingo", as in that of the first albums. A word about the delivery of Brandon precisely: good. His voice and interpretation bring a lot to this "Battle Born".

I personally love "Sam's Town" and it is clear that "Battle Born" can match because of his more gentillet appearance, easy or smooth. But that does not mean that this new album is devoid of highlights or flamboyance provided. Just listen to the excellent title track to be convinced. The guitars are out, the chorus is epic and excellent. It will be a great moment on stage, for sure. There are some other removed and catchy songs like the single "Runaways" or "Rising Tide" or the very pop "Deadlines and Commitments" on absolutely unstoppable melody. I hang at least the ballad "Here With Me", too cloying for my taste. Speaking of ballads, know that the album still has a number. Three, if we add "Heart of a Girl" (most successful) and "Be Still". "The Way It Was" also flirted with this style but has a somewhat greater tempo. In any case, the latter, the easy to remember chorus (as many songs on this album, very immediate) is, again, marked with the seal of the 80s pop Some will like, others will wonder what is happened to the band that once had composed much more pĂȘchus titles like "Mr. Brightside," "Somebody Told Me," "When You Were Young," "Sam's Town" or "For Reasons Unknown" ... I do am not a big fan of trip pop / country "From Here On Out" that could serve as soundtrack to the next Disney. In contrast, a bonus limited edition, "Carry Me Home" in close enough style "Sweet Talk" (very good song to disk "Sawdust") worth.

I'm not saying that I will be as lenient with the group at each of its new releases if it continues in this direction and continues to deliver albums less strong ... But for now, the charm works again and Despite some flaws or small moments of weakness, I really want to listen to it regularly "Battle Born". However, I really would not be surprised that a number of fans is not more excited than that. The Killers do not take a lot of risks and raking off ... it will not be to the liking of everyone.
