Who spends money on a Sony Alpha SLT, should never save on the lens. The SAL 1650 is worth every penny and can be recommended without any restriction. The optical performance comes close to that of a fixed focal length, and with good intensity. The latter was for me the reason, 1680 to give this lens in preference to the Sony SAL from Zeiss, which covers a slightly larger telephoto range, but fainter. The wide range is 16 mm down far enough (equivalent to a KB focal length of 24 mm); all you need only in the rarest of cases. The slight distortion is compensated inside the camera (except for RAW), but can also be nächträglich straightened with software. The metrological any detectable residual error are so insignificant that they are irrelevant for the pictorial photography. In summary, the standard zoom for each SLT.
