"Ride the Lightning" is for me the great big slap in the face taken one day in 1985 when I first listened to this album. This quiet little intro that hides a tornado: "Fight fire with fire" with its impressive double pedal. I did listen to a title soon after drummer buddy, he was amazed. Final explosion and linking with the following title, "Ride the Lightning" with its rhythm breaks to fade again all instrumentalists. Finally, we take a breath and now we hear bells: it's the atomization with "For whom the bell tolls" without a doubt my favorite track Metallica forever. Heavy and powerful. Can you imagine a Metallica concert without this title, you? Not me! This Lars Ulrich, what strikes! I was already hooked. But it was not counting the following title, "Fade to Black", my second favorite song of Metallica. In a way, Metallica proved that we could play a high-powered music without neglecting the melody.
The first face is finished and therefore it was hard to understand what had happened. And that sound! Guitars, bass, drums, everything seemed in overdrive. I must admit that I found the previous album, kill'em all a little after it and my first reaction was to be disappointed as we did not found this monumental.
The second face is perhaps a little less intense. It starts with the nag "Trapped under ice" but it is true that "Escape" is less successful. It was after that genius strikes again with "Creeping Death". This solo Kirk Hammett! A masterpiece of the genre. My second favorite song of Metallica. Slim ah, I already wrote, that. Well then, we will say that this is the second tie. Anyway, you can imagine a Metallica concert without this title, you? Not me! If you have ever experienced a crowd yelling "Die! Die!" the orders of a hilarious James Hetfield, you understand what I mean.
And to finish off, a copy instrumental "The Call of Ktulu" on which Dave Mustaine, former guitarist of the group and leader of Megadeth is credited to the composition (like on "Ride the Lightning", btw). Technical instrumental where musicians show once again their expertise. Special mention to the late Cliff Burton and his bass to sound so special.
There. For 25 years, every time I revert this album, I take the same slap me. For this record is awesome, simply. And history was just beginning ...
